This is my Cinderella story and it involves a pair of Converse shoes. Yellow, to be precise. What can I say, I was in my pick-me, “I’m not like other girls” phase. Trying to win the attention of a popular rough guy with a “I’m not like other people” type of thing going on. And I was earning my first money. Which resulted in experimenting with absences and fancy breakfasts, and an infamous pair of branded shoes I would have otherwise never put my eyes on.
We All Had That One Crush

I was 14 when I had my first crush (but don’t tell my first boyfriend, as we met a year later). He was a slightly famous bad boy with a unique style (adult me would have seen him as a hipster, but, again, I was 14), and he loved to wear green Converse shoes.
I was a shy, introverted teenager, and he was the brother of a classmate. One day, I mustered up the courage and asked my school friend about her brother’s shoes, and, with much disappointment, I found out they had been bought during a trip to the States. I was still determined to get something similar for myself, and I kept on looking on every shelf.
The Converse That Finally Changed the Conversation.

One day, while traveling with my family, I saw a pair of almost Converse that were of a similar shade of green. I knew it wasn’t exactly the same thing, and that kids at my school didn’t tend to take well off brand items, but it was my turn to get a new pair of sneakers, so I let the price play in my favor against the “pick something that will last for many years” argument.
With that pair, I became obsessed with the style options. And, as I turned 15 and started taking up more summer jobs and side gigs, I started having my own savings. Call it immaturity, call it “I was still feeling guilty for asking my parents to buy me something that was pretty instead of functional, and I used it as an excuse to overspend with a cause”, but I went and bought myself an original pair of Converse shoes. A yellow one (that’s what I found).
And What About Him?

Well, the yellow shoes gave me a new found flow. I was feeling independent, pretty, and in control of my spending (many more awakenings were ahead of me in that sense, but youth has its own peculiar bliss), and I ended up meeting another person, who didn’t have as much of a bad reputation, and who brought me to a concert where I almost lost my shoes because of bad illumination (it’s a bit more embarrassing than this, but let me save some).
The other boy was forgotten, until he noticed me out of the blue (I bet it was the confidence given by the shoes, but that is yet to be proven), and started fighting for my attention. I attributed so much power to those shoes, I brought them with me for a decade. Years later, I’m freelancing overseas and packing for a hairstyle event as a model, and my shoes were still with me.
Not the same could be said of the boys, but life went on as it does. Unfortunately, as the event was closing and the runway was over, I happened to be in a rush and I left as it was dark outside already. Only to realize, the day after, that my shoes had stayed at the location, and no one seemed to have found them. I never got my shoes back, but I guess the memories I built while wearing them are now strong enough to make me believe in that miraculously found confidence even in their absence.
