Young Thug, a Grammy-award-winning American rapper originally named Jeffery Williams, was undergoing a trial and is now put on hold. The Young Thug trial has been ongoing since his indictment in May 2022 and still, no sentence has been given. Not only this but also the delays that have taken place, with the latest being that the trial is currently paused, aren’t making the proceeding of the required legal processes any easier. Let’s see what happened and why is it so hard for the trail to go smoothly.
Why Is the Young Thug Trial Taking Place?
Young Thug is the CEO of his own record label, Young Stoner Life, better known as YSL. There are artists on his record label who are considered to be a part of the “Slime Family,” which led to the compilation album, “Slime Language 2,” rising to No. 1 on the charts in April 2021.
Another indictment in August 2022 took place, accusing Young Thug and 27 others of conspiring to violate Georgia’s Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act. These indictments contain 65 counts of felony charges, with six of them applying to the American rapper, and leading to the Young Thug trial taking place.
And the prosecution showed no mercy in the Young Thug trial. Prosecutors alleged that YSL also stands for Young Slime Life, which they claim is an Atlanta-based violent street gang founded by Young Thug and two other people. In addition, the prosecution suspects that they’re affiliated with the national Bloods gang. Prosecutors also added that people named in the indictment are responsible for violent crimes — these include killings, shootings, and carjackings — aiming to collect money for the gang, burnish its reputation, gain more power, and expand its territory.

The Young Thug trial faced so many delays. For instance, it took 10 months to select the Jury since January 2023, which is abnormally long. This led to the opening statements being only made in November. Since then, the prosecution has been presenting its case, calling dozens of witnesses, it’s only way later that the defense got to shine with the upcoming cause for delay.
The defense said Fulton County Superior Court Judge Ural Glanville held a meeting on June 10th when he met with prosecutors and a key witness in private. Defense attorneys alleged that Judge Glanville was pressuring the witness into testifying. The judge denied these motions and announced from the bench that he would release the private meeting’s transcript, send the recusal motions to another judge, and that the Young Thug trial would remain in recess until another judge decides whether he should remain on the case or not.
All that came after last month as the rapper’s lead attorney, Brian Steel, refused to disclose to Glanville in the Young Thug trial how he learned of the private meeting in question. Steel was taken into custody for alleged contempt of court. He was ordered to serve a 20-day sentence over 10 weekends. However, the Georgia Supreme Court granted an emergency motion for bond. That means that he no longer had to report to jail, according to The Washington Post. No one knows what to expect or how long the delay will be. Stay tuned to find out more.
