Lollapalooza received a message from rapper Tyler The Creator two months before announcing their concert lineup. He will be canceling his 2024 appearance for the August concert. Outside Lands has received the same announcement with both music events quickly searching for musicians who will fill his spot. Could the young, talented rapper be taking a break from performing or is something happening behind the scenes? Here’s why Tyler stepped back from two of the largest music celebrations.
Announced After Kendrick Lamar’s Juneteenth Show
This past Juneteenth (June 19th), Kendrick Lamar hosted The Pop Out: Ken & Friends show at the Los Angeles Kia Forum. Tyler The Creator was one of the musicians who joined Lamar on his mission to motivate unification with his fellow rappers. Tyler performed his famous hit “Earfquake”, where he sings about a person losing what they love. The concert was very successful despite Lamar’s ongoing feud with Drake for the past few months.
Then, something unexpected came the following day. On 10:01 AM, June 20th, Tyler posted a statement on Twitter (now X):
“I hate saying this but I have to cancel Lollapalooza and Outside Lands. I made a commitment that I can no longer keep, and that bums me out knowing how excited folks were. That is not sexy at all. Please, please forgive or call me names when you see me in person, love.”
No Known Reason
For the past 24 hours, most of Tyler’s fanbase grew heartbroken by the announcement since Lollapalooza and Outside Lands are two influential concerts featuring diverse musicians from around the world. They helped Tyler jumpstart his hip-hop career, successfully reaching out to millions of fans over the past five years. News outlets have tried to reach out to his representative hoping for an answer for his concert cancelation.
So far, there is no known reason. Fans have speculated it could be his enthusiastic performances have led him to burn out. His Twitter statement says that he is bummed out. Tyler will break his annual performance streak at Lollapalooza and Outside Lands. Tyler has been receiving both upsetting and supportive messages for canceling two of his biggest concerts. His reasons remain unknown until further notice.
Filling Tyler’s Performance Slots
After receiving the message about Tyler’s announcement, Lollapalooza and Outside Lands organizers needed to fill his performance slot. In a couple of hours, two musicians stepped up to the plate when both of the festivals’ sites updated their concert slots overnight. Hip-hop artist Megan Thee Stallion will perform Lollapalooza’s opening act alongside Irish soul singer-songwriter Hozier on Thursday, Aug. 1st. For Outside Lands, pop artist Sabrina Carpenter will appear on their Day 2 concert (Saturday, August 10th).
Fans later reread Tyler The Creator’s June 20th announcement noticing he said, “Please, please”. They believed the rapper was hinting towards Carpenter’s appearance as her latest album release is Please, Please, Please. It was convenient for Megan as she was currently traveling for her 2024 concert tour, Hot Girls Summer. A few fans are still frustrated as they paid for their tickets in advance to see Tyler live.
