Although she shares a name with a notable teenage witch, Sabrina Carpenter’s success isn’t the work of magic. It’s nearly impossible to listen to a catalog of today’s pop hits and not come across one or two of her songs. After pausing her acting career, the former child actor has been making waves in the music scene for months. How exactly did she go from a budding actress to an overnight chart-topping hitmaking sensation? Let’s uncover how.
Sabrina Carpenter’s Early Acting Career
The 25-year-old pop star first began to make a name for herself through a handful of small roles on the small screen. She burst onto the scene as Paula Moretti, a young girl who gives Detective Elliot Stabler some vital information on an assault case, in a season 12 episode of Law and Order: Special Victims Unit. Her subsequent roles were as background characters in the beloved animated Disney series Phineas and Ferb, a guest-starring role on the Netflix original series Orange is The New Black, and a recurring role as a young Chloe Goodwin on the FOX sitcom The Goodwin Games.
During this time, she was also running a YouTube channel where she would upload her covers of hit songs by Adele and Taylor Swift, such as “Set Fire to the Rain” and “Shake it Off”. In 2013, Sabrina Carpenter was cast in one of her most regarded roles as Maya Hart on the Disney Channel original series Girl Meets World. The show was a spin-off of the beloved 90’s sitcom Boy Meets World that starred Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel as Cory Matthews and Topanga Lawrence respectively, who reprised their roles in the continued series. Maya is the best friend of Cory and Topanga’s daughter, Riley Matthews, played by Rowan Blanchard.
Sabrina’s Rise To The Top
The theme song for Girl Meets World, “Take on The World,” which was written and performed by Carpenter and Blanchard, nabbed a spot on Billboard’s Kids Digital Song Sales chart. The coming-of-age show ran for three seasons from June 2014 to January 2017. When hopes of a fourth season were dashed and the show was unjustly canceled, the cast, including Carpenter, continued to find work despite the tragedy. The Pennsylvania native went on to rack up roles in hit movies, as she starred in 2018’s crime drama The Hate U Give and the Netflix romantic comedies Tall Girl and Tall Girl 2. Her music career was also beginning to take off at this point.
Signed to Disney’s Hollywood Records, Sabrina Carpenter began to work with talented stars like Meghan Trainor as she released her first single and EP of the same name, Can’t Blame a Girl for Trying, in 2014. Eyes Wide Open, her first full-length studio album, shot to spot number 43 on Billboard’s Top 200 charts. Her second album, Evolution, surpassed her freshman work at number 28. Another single of hers, “Thumbs,” reached the same spot on the Pop charts.
In 2021, the former Disney Channel star would leave the company behind when she met with Island Records. At her new label, she put out another single entitled “Skin,” which landed her first Billboard top 100 spot at number 48. Her 2022 LP, Emails I Can’t Send, rose to number 23 and landed her a #1 spot when her song “Feather” rocketed to the top on the Pop charts. Her live performances began to make music enthusiasts take notice of her prowess.
We’re Officially Under Sabrina Carpenter’s Spell
Sabrina Carpenter opened and performed alongside Taylor Swift at South American shows of the Evermore artist’s Eras Tour in 2023 and earlier this year. She would also go on to perform at the Coachella Festival back in April. When the pop hit “Espresso” was released in the same month, it became clear that Sabrina was here to stay. The summer earworm reached third on the Billboard Hot 100; she would go on to perform the catchy hit on a May 2024 episode of Saturday Night Live.
At long last, she attained the #1 spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 with the single “Please, Please, Please.” The music video for the single also confirmed many rumors that she was now dating Saltburn star Barry Keoghan. With the world listening to her music now and a Song of the Year VMA under her belt, it’s clear that she is an artist who is here to stay.
