Tacos may rule Tuesdays, but Fridays are all about new albums. This week’s list of new releases features offerings from Demi Lovato, Brandi Carlisle, Halle Bailey, and more. Whether you favor CDs, vinyl, or digital downloads, it is time to start making your list. Here is a look at this week’s new music and five new albums that you definitely need to check out.

Pop diva Demi Lovato returns this Friday with her ninth studio album. While her last two projects steered more into rock territory and focused on her struggles at the time, that is not the case with her new album. It’s Not That Deep is just that–an album that does not delve into Lovato’s personal demons. Instead, the album is a light dance-pop offering that seems almost happy. The “Sorry Not Sorry” singer leaves most of the drama behind and finally gets back to her roots. The album’s first three singles have already been released–“Fast,” “Here All Night,” and “Kiss.”

Brandi Carlile — Returning to Myself (Interscope/Lost Highway)

11-time Grammy winner Brandi Carlile releases her eighth studio album this Friday. After collaborative work with The Highwomen (Carlile, Amanda Shires, Maren Morris, and Natalie Hemby), Elton John, Tanya Tucker, and Joni Mitchell, the folk rock/Americana legend is back on her own again. Carlile was not eager to be alone with her own thoughts again. On the title track, she sings, “Returning to myself is such a lonely thing to do, but it’s the only thing to do.” The new album touches on the difficulty of loneliness and introspection, while stressing the importance of finding oneself.

Halle — Love? Or Something Like It (Parkwood Entertainment/Columbia Records)

Halle (Bailey) breaks away from her sister duo Chloe x Halle to release her first full-length solo album. The 25-year-old R&B singer doesn’t break away completely, enlisting sister Chloe, as well as GloRilla, H.E.R., and Mariah the Scientist to help her launch the debut. The 15-track album is presented as a story of first love, heartbreak, and everything that comes after. The album’s “Angel” earned the singer a 2024 Grammy nomination for Best R&B Song.

Skylar Grey – Angel With Tattoos (self-released)

Skylar Grey may not be a name you are familiar with, but it should be. The singer/songwriter has worked with the likes of Eminem, Jelly Roll, X Ambassadors, DR. Dre, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Train, and a host of other well-known acts. She has been nominated for five Grammy awards and is probably best known for co-writing Eminem’s and Rihanna’s “Love the Way You Lie.” Grey is now focused on reclaiming a part of her past, finally re-recording and finishing an album from 2019 called Angel With Tattoos. The album will feature five previously released songs, including a solo version of her songs “Glorious” (written with Macklemore) and “Walk on Water” (written with Eminem), plus new music.

Mammoth — The End (BMG)

Mammoth started as Wolfgang Van Halen’s side project away from his dad’s band. When Eddie Van Halen passed away in 2020 and Van Halen disbanded permanently, it became Wolfgang’s full-time gig. The End is Mammoth’s third studio album. The apple did not fall far from the tree. Eddie was always the first to say that his son was every bit as good as he was. That signature Van Halen finger tapping technique is front and center at the start of the album’s chart-topping title track. With two chart-topping hard rock albums and seven Top Ten Mainstream rock singles already under his belt, the Van Halen name is sure to be synonymous with rock and roll for decades to come.
