Legendary Collaboration: Nas and DJ Premier Announce New Album

Hip hop heads simply aren’t ready for this one! Nas and DJ Premier have officially confirmed the release of their collaborative album, Light-Years. Set for release on December 12, 2025, the long-awaited album will be issued via Mass Appeal Records. Described as a 30-year legacy reborn, the album features 15 tracks produced by DJ Premier.

Light-Years Was Nearly 20 Years in the Making

With origins tracing back to 2006, the project’s announcement was made on November 25, 2025. It included the album’s title, cover art, and release date. The surprise announcement created much anticipation from fans. Photographed by Danny Hastings, with art direction by Mike Lukowski, the album’s simplistic cover is eye-catching. Clad in black, against a black background, the two pioneers were illuminated by a glowing light source. This effect highlighted their jewelry, which included Rolex watches and gold rope chains.

The Rise of Nas

Known for his lyrical prowess, Nasir Jones, simply known as Nas, is hip hop royalty. Since the release of his hit album Illmatic(1994), the Queensbridge, New York native has taken the world by storm. A hip-hop masterpiece, Illmatic outlines Nas’ inner-city life. Debuting at number 12 on the US Billboard 200 chart, the album received significant praise. Years after its release, Illmatic remains one of the most influential albums of all time.

Throughout his career, Nas has acquired a multitude of hits and has received 16 Grammy nominations. He won his very first Grammy in 2021, for Best Rap Album with King’s Disease. He was nominated again in 2022 and 2024 for King’s Disease II and King’s Disease III, respectively.

The Rise of DJ Premier

Also known as Preemo, Christopher “DJ Premier” Martin rose to prominence in 1989. As half of Gang Starr, Premier and the late rapper Guru released six acclaimed albums before splitting in 2004. The Texas-born pioneer is currently half of the hip hop duo PRhyme, along with Royce da 5’9”. Since their formation in 2014, the duo has released two albums.

Premier’s production style is notable for his use of samples from multiple R&B, jazz and funk artists. He is also known for his innovative techniques, such as creating memorable hooks, using vocal snippets. In 2007, his collaboration with Christina Aguilera on the song, “Ain’t No Other Man” was a major hit. It earned Aguilera the Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards. In 2023, he received a Latin Grammy nomination for his collaboration with Colombian singer Feid on the song “Le Pido a Dios”. The mid-tempo track was nominated for Best Rap/Hip Hop Song.
