Music genres have a way of returning to the mainstream several years after reaching the height of their popularity. In 2024, many artists have been coming out with pop country music, including Beyoncé, Post Malone, and Young Gravy. While pop country is a more widely known resurgence, many other music genres are gaining traction this year. Interestingly enough, most of the music that is becoming popular this year is inspired by the 90s music scene, including alternative, house music, and rap.
Ready to Rock
In 2024, 90s alternative rock has been bolstered thanks to the numerous bands reuniting for a tour. This week, Smashing Pumpkins was catapulted into the trending online news for bringing Chino Moreno of Deftones onstage at a show in Portland, Oregon. Smashing Pumpkins were on the road in support of Green Day’s The Saviors Tour. With the Deftones recently announcing their 2025 tour, the timing was right to bring Moreno onstage to stoke interest. Moreno lent his unique vocal stylings to “Jellybelly” off the 1995 hit double album release from Smashing Pumpkins. Video clips of the performance have been flooding the internet.
Many Gen X and millennial music fans have had a lot of reunion concerts to choose from this year. Some of the more popular bands of the time, including Foo Fighters, Weezer, and Third Eye Blind, are just a few of the bands on tour this year. Oasis, a band that dominated the charts in the 90s, shocked the world when they announced a reunion tour. The New York Post reported tickets for the 17-show tour in the UK and Ireland sold out “almost as soon as tickets went on sale.”
House Music Genre Comes Back
Thanks to Charli XCX’s brat girl summer, house music has returned to the Billboard charts. According to an article by The Guardian, her lead single, “Von Dutch,” made many listeners believe she used a sample from Bodyrox’s late 2000s hit “Yeah Yeah.” Instead of using a sample, Charli XCX created her track in hommage of the electro-house music genre.
The popularity of house music has been growing over the past few years in the U.S. This growth of the music genre that was made popular in the late 90s/early 2000s can be attributed to the growing amount of stateside music festivals with house musicians. At Movement Detroit 2024, techno pioneers Carl Craig and Fatboy Slim were some of the names that stood out on the bill.
Rap Music’s Decline and Resurgence
While researching music genres making a comeback in 2024, it was surprising to learn that rap music was repeatedly listed in news stories. According to an article by Complex, the hip-hop genre has been in decline, arguably, for the past two years. Notably, the article stated that rap artists GloRilla and Sexyy Red have released quality singles this year.
One of the biggest moments for rap music this year was when Kendrick Lamar was announced as the 2025 Super Bowl halftime show entertainment. As previously reported, the “Not Like Us” artist was selected by the NFL, Apple Music, and Roc Nation selected the Compton artist because he is a “once-in-a-generation performer.” He has become a leader in the resurgence of the rap music genre for 2024.
Final Thoughts
As mentioned in the opening of this article, music genres have a way of returning to the spotlight and finding new audiences. In 2024, older generations are gravitating towards music that makes them nostalgic for the 90s. Gen Z also played a role in making these music genres popular again as more and more songs from these eras find footing on TikTok.
