It was recently revealed that we now know the cause of death of the true songbird of Christ, Mandisa Hundley: complications of class III obesity. That sadly doesn’t dull a whole lot of the sting of hearing about her April 18th death. But it certainly to an extent calms our spirit in the actual victory that is her life.
She certainly did, however, fight many demons as some may know. But a lot of us may not know to what extent. That ends now as we remember a bit closer some of the triumphs she had (which honestly had nothing to do with her career as a singer). And those triumphs are proof that while her condition took her away from us too soon, she’s still living proof that anyone can achieve great things in the name of Christ Jesus. Starting with:
Mandisa Did Battle Depression, Considering Suicide for Some Time
Many might already know this, but we might not know how public she was with it all. Back in 2017, she even appeared on “Good Morning America” to credit her Lord and Savior for saving her life. It was that battle that forced her into a hiatus from performing for how long? Three years.
Those three years, however, were necessary as she fought her way back onto the stage. She no doubt didn’t do it alone. She had the Counselor with her. And there was nothing that would stop her.
Mandisa Even Wrote About It in a Book She Published
Say what?? The lady did more than just sing? Oh, but of course, she did. The book was titled “Out of the Dark: My Journey Through the Shadows to Find God’s Joy,” released in 2022. It was named after an album she released back in 2017.
Some of the details, she was candid about in a 2022 interview with The Christian Post. And in that particular interview, we learned that a lot of her emotional and mental affliction was due to one of her dearest friends dying of breast cancer.
“I isolated myself, I didn’t want to talk about it, and I battled with the shame of feeling like I didn’t have enough faith or that God was displeased with me.” – Mandisa
Yet, speaking of those challenges put more weight on how she was able to overcome them. Like how her most well-known single would say out loud — “You’re an overcomer!”
And Best of All, She Even Had the Strength to Publicly Forgive a Certain American Idol Judge!
Watching this YouTube video may just make you melt.
It’s not easy when you know why. Mandisa’s audition for American Idol, while she got the thumbs up to go to Hollywood, left her hurt at Cowell’s comment about needing a “bigger stage,” poking fun at her weight. Still Mandisa had more than enough strength not to lash out, but to calmly and sweetly forgive him.
The result of forgiving him was an utter dismantling of the man known for tearing down contestants. Now that’s…. How you kill someone with kindness.
We Have No Doubt Mandisa Will Live on Inside of Us
When we play any Christian music, in fact. After all, she collaborated with some major greats out there: Kirk Franklin, TobyMac, Michael W. Smith, and Matthew West, just to name a few. So it’s a great day when we can lift our hands up to our Father and say we’re overcomers.
She was arguably the first to say we are. She is as well. And now…. She can rest. Amen.
