The list of nominations for the upcoming MTV Video Music Awards features a wide range of big and small acts and artists. With the usual suspects of superstars like Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish, Eminem, Taylor Swift, and the queen bee herself, Beyonce, returning for one of the year’s biggest nights in music, the event is poised to be a memorable night for most. It will be one especially for fans of K-pop. Let’s dive into what awards night will feature.
K-Pop At The Awards
Fans are no strangers to seeing their favorite K-pop groups appear regularly at Western award shows. Though still a relatively new phenomenon in the nearly forty-year history of the MTV Video Music Awards, the genre’s inclusion as a viable and credible part of the industry has given long-time fans of K-pop a much-needed sense of being seen and understood.
No longer is K-pop a niche in the West: it is now a popular and thriving avenue for music that speaks to everyone, no matter which language they speak. The popularity of K-pop acts has grown so much that the music industry has increasingly included submissions from the genre over the last few years, mirroring the acceptance and excitement the genre’s fans have known for decades.

Joining their predecessors like BTS and Monsta X, many of today’s biggest acts are once again on the list of the Best K-pop songs of the year. The list of nominations includes Smoothie by NCT Dream, Super Shy by New Jeans, LALALALA by Stray Kids, and Déjà Vu by Together X Tomorrow (TXT). Rounding out the nominations is K-pop’s first Korean solo artist to ever win at the VMAs. LISA, of BlackPink fame, has been nominated for “Rockstar,” a song that has not only landed a spot as one of the best all year but has also garnered nominations for Best Choreography, Best Art Direction, and Best Editing.
Outside of the Best K-pop category, the world-renowned main vocalist for BTS, Jungkook, has also snagged a nomination in the Best Collaboration category with the song “Seven,” featuring Latto. The competition will be stiff, pitting him against artists like Taylor Swift, Post Malone, GloRilla, Jesse Murph, and Drake. New Jeans, TXT, NCT Dream, and Seventeen make their relevance and presence known even further by being nominated for Group of the Year, alongside other popular Western groups like Coldplay, Twenty-One Pilots, Imagine Dragons, and N*SYNC.
