BTS ‘s J-Hope Returns Home From 2-Year Military Service

Troll Band Together, pop stars, j-hope

One-seventh of K-pop sensation BTS, J-Hope was discharged from his mandatory military service on Thursday in Wonju, South Korea. After 18 months of duty, J-Hope became the second member of BTS to complete his military service, following the oldest member, Jin. The release of Jin and J-Hope has fans excited to see the full boyband come back together in 2025. The group remains on hiatus as RM, Suga, Jimin, V, and Jungkook finish their national duty, but will we see a reunion next year? Grab a banana milk as we discuss everything we know about J-Hope’s safe return home.

J-Hope’s Rise to Fame

J-Hope is often cited as BTS‘s “Sunshine”. He always presents himself as smiling and happy, making jokes and laughing with his friends. He was scouted for BTS before their debut in 2012 while working as a full-time dancer. He auditioned for the band’s label, Big Hit Entertainment, for a role as a rapper. K-pop doesn’t work the same way as Western music. K-pop groups are manufactured, meaning young hopefuls audition to train as idols and are placed in groups before they debut to the public. BTS was no different, with all members having diverse backgrounds and skill sets.

J-Hope would pass Big Hit’s audition for his skills in dance and rhythm. Although he disagreed with the company and nearly left BTS early, the group’s leader, RM, convinced J-Hope to stay with the band. He has since become one of the group’s main choreographers and a core member of the rap line. J-Hope has also released two popular full-length mixtapes of his solo hip-hop work and 1 EP. He has become a fan favorite for his bubbly personality, unique rap, and impressive dance moves.

The Dancer’s Return Home

In South Korea, all young men ages 18 to 35 are required to serve a military term. K-pop idols are no exception to the rule. The only men exempt from military service are those competing as Olympic athletes, those who are deemed mentally or physically unfit, those who have lost family members in the military, North Korean defectors, and those who have been awarded national honors. These rules are always changing, but all men who don’t fit into those categories are now called to serve terms between 18 and 21 months.

J-Hope humbly greeted around 100 fans and several reporters during his dischargement ceremony. He thanked his fans, crediting them for giving him the strength to finish his term safely. He also made note of the hardworking troops in South Korea, showing an emotional understanding for the men and women who serve. Cordial or not, J-Hope is still J-Hope. In his typical “Sunshine” fashion, he walked out smiling, hugging his bandmate Jin before his speech. He did a short victory dance and waved to his fans, cheering as he walked to his car. Those who attended the ceremony expressed excitement and joy to see the dancer home safe and sound.

In Conclusion

With J-Hope and Jin having finished their military service, BTS still has five other members serving the remainder of their terms. However, seeing another member come home is always a spark of hope for ARMYs patiently waiting for BTS to end their hiatus. J-Hope is a beloved rapper, dancer, and part of the One True Seven. Balancing his dedication to serving his country with his music career has been no easy feat. It’s safe to say we’re all thrilled to see him back home with his bandmates.
