Future To Drop New Mixtape May 10th After Kickstarting Epic Rap Beef
Future isnโt done yet. The Atlanta rapper who just put out two full-length studio albums alongside longtime collaborator Metro Boominโ has announced he has a new project coming this weekend. This comes less than two months after those two albums and following a massive rap beef that he helped kick off.ย
The rapper has long been one of the most prolific rappers. Since his debut album in 2012, heโs put out more than 20 projects. There are very few musicians working harder than Future, even at this late stage in his career, and the first five months of 2024 prove that. Even if he doesnโt drop anything in the remaining seven months of the year, three full projects are a lot.ย

May 10 is the official release date of Futureโs latest project, which he said will be a return to his mixtape form. That probably doesnโt mean it wonโt come out on major streaming services since most of his projects, even mixtapes, have been put there. Thanks to his role in the preeminent beef of the modern era of hip-hop, he could capitalize with a lot of streams.ย
The Atlanta-based trap artist and producer Metro Boomin came together to create a rarity: an entire diss album. They followed it up just a couple of weeks later with even more songs and disses aimed at Drake. They got plenty of collaborators to come on board (Kendrick Lamar, The Weeknd, Travis Scott, A$AP Rocky, etc), but they were driving the train.ย
The two projects prompted a response from Drake, who dissed the two main collaborators and others on his track Push Ups. He also brought them back up later in Family Matters. Future did not respond, although he might have some words for his former friend on this new mixtape.
How Future Started The Beef
While this entire beef was clearly a cold war between Kendrick Lamar and Drake, the Atlanta superstarโs role cannot be overlooked. Without his frustration over Drakeโs behavior and the subtle shots the Toronto singer sent his way, the projects might not have come to fruition. If they hadnโt, then Lamar might not have been able to call Drake out on Like That, thus keeping anything from starting up.ย ย
Future was upset, as was Metro Boomin (who also had other grievances), about the promised What A Time To Be Alive sequel that would have been made by all three of them. It instead turned into Her Loss, a collaborative effort between Drake and 21 Savage. That, as well as some subliminal shots from Drake in For All the Dogs, prompted We Donโt Trust You and We Still Donโt Trust You. Those officially turned the heat up on that Cold War and started one of the darkest hip-hop conflicts ever. What went down might not have been planned, but it started with Future and Metro Boomin.ย
Listeners should not expect to hear Drake featured on the project. The two have songs together on the majority of the Atlanta rapperโs projects, but that probably wonโt continue. This beef, regardless of who won, has likely done irreparable damage to the hip-hop industry. There may never be another Drake/Future song ever again.
