Today’s Epic Earworm: INXS — “Suicide Blonde”

The epic earworm for today comes from Aussie rockers INXS. “Suicide Blonde” was the lead single off the band’s double-platinum seventh album, simply entitled X. The sampled harmonica riffs and trademark Michael Hutchence vocals enthralled fans worldwide. The song went Top Ten in nine countries, and topped the pop charts in Canada and New Zealand, as well as the Mainstream Rock and Alternative charts in the United States. The song caused controversy, though, as the title was misinterpreted to be about suicide. It grew even more controversial after the suicide of Hutchence in November of 1997.
More About Blonde Than Suicide
Those who cared enough to research the song soon learned the real story behind the title. When Hutchence was working on X, he was dating singer/actress Kylie Minogue. Minogue told the late singer that she was going to dye her hair “suicide blonde,” meaning bleach blonde or peroxide blonde, for an upcoming movie role. Hutchence loved the phrase and, along with bandmate Andrew Farriss, turned it into an extremely catchy song. “Suicide Blonde” was only certified gold, so maybe Minogue should have gone for platinum blonde.
