Everyone gets songs stuck in their heads that just won’t go away. They sneak into your subconscious. They are epic earworms that you find yourself humming uncontrollably, singing in the shower, or tapping the beat to with your foot or ballpoint pen when you should be working. Sometimes they even keep you awake at night. Whether they are current hits, one-hit wonders, movie soundtrack gems, holiday favorites, or songs from your youth, their catchy vocals, riffs, hooks, and choruses seem to linger for days.

Here, those songs find a home, no matter the genre. Here, those epic earworms are revisited, explained, and celebrated. Here, you may find the song that haunts you tomorrow. Here is today’s unescapable song of the day…and the story behind it.

Hozier’s 2024 epic earworm “Too Sweet” was originally supposed to be on his platinum-selling third studio album, Unreal Unearth. The song, along with three others, fit with the theme of the album, but were not ready in time. So, when the leftover songs were finally ready, they became his seventh EP, Unheard.

“Too Sweet” was a smashing success for Hozier. The song topped five different Billboard charts in the United States and found its way into Top Tens all over the world. It was certified sextuple-platinum in the U.S. and reached as high as double-diamond status in other countries across the globe. More than a decade after the Irish singer had a chart-topping megahit with “Take Me to Church,” he had done it again.

Never Meet Your Heroes…Hungover

The themes running through Unreal Unearth and Unheard dealt with the nine circles of Hell in Dante’s Inferno. One of those circles dealt with gluttony, and that is where some of the lines from “Too Sweet” come in, both in theme and in how they were conceived. The story behind it is a long one, involving a long night of drinking, a terrible hangover, an unfortunate accident, and a plane ride with actor Cillian Murphy. It is a story best told by the singer himself. Here is Hozier regaling a live audience with all the sordid and embarrassing details, courtesy of TikTok user @hey.itslizzz:

So that is where the lines “I aim low, I aim true and the ground’s where I go” in Hozier‘s epic earworm originated. All’s well that ends well, it seems. The song was unavoidable for almost a year after its release and earned the singer numerous award nominations.
