Chappell Roan Addresses ‘Creepy Behavior’ By Fans In New Post

Chappell Roan

Fan culture has come under intense scrutiny in recent years. With the rise of social media, many fans have become more obsessive about their favorite celebrities. Whether it’s stalking their faves social media, creating think pieces, or running fan accounts, it seems that celebrity and fan culture have gotten out of hand. Rising pop star, Chappell Roan, recently took to social media to set boundaries with her fans and many have something to say about it.

The pop star blew up this year due to her hits “Red Wine Supernova”, “HOT TO GO!”, and “Good Luck, Babe!” which went viral on TikTok. Roan has been in the music industry for about ten years, however, she hasn’t ever experienced the level of stardom that she is now. Between opening for Olivia Rodrigo, playing at large music festivals, and performing on talk shows, Roan is quickly rising to great heights.

While this is something that she talks about always wanting, she isn’t fond of the extra attention she’s been getting. More than paparazzi, which many celebrities express their gripes about, Roan is turning to her fans and setting boundaries with them. Although some fans don’t agree with the way she’s doing it.

On Monday, Chappell Roan took to her official TikTok account with two videos, each a minute long, speaking about her experiences with fans crossing her boundaries. In the videos she asserts that she doesn’t want fans to come up to her when she’s not working and on her private time, asking for photos and hugs. She also says that it isn’t okay for people to get upset with her when she tells them no.

The TikTok Videos

She began her minute-long video by saying, “If you saw a random woman on the street, would you yell at her from the car window? Would you harass her in public? Would you go up to a random lady and say ‘Can I get a photo with you?’ and she’s like ‘No, what the f—?’ and then you get mad at this random lady?” Roan continues, “Would you be offended if she says no to your time because she has her own time? Would you stalk her family? Would you follow her around?” Of course, she’s the ‘random lady’ in this example and is attempting she show how strange it is when people feel entitled to celebrities.

In the second video she posted on the same day, Roan continues with her point, “I don’t care that abuse and harassment, stalking, whatever, is a normal thing to do to people who are famous or a little famous. I don’t care that it’s normal, I don’t care that this crazy type of behavior comes along with the job, the career field I’ve chosen. That does not make it okay, doesn’t make it normal, doesn’t mean that I want it, doesn’t mean that I like it.”

The comments for both videos were disabled, but that didn’t stop many on TikTok from reacting to the statements from Roan. Some reactions were positive, from people who agree with her and believe that fan culture has gotten out of hand. Others felt that Chappell Roan was a bit out of touch and complaining about things that weren’t true problems or weren’t as bad as what others were going through.

After mixed reactions to her TikTok videos, both of which are still up on her account, Chappell Roan took to her Instagram to be more clear in her message. In part, her message reads, “For the past 10 years I’ve been going non-stop to build my project and it’s come to the point that I need to draw lines and set boundaries. I have wanted to be an artist for a very very long time. I’ve been in too many non-consensual physical and social interactions and I just need to lay it out and remind you, women don’t owe you sh–.”

Roan then elaborates on what kinds of fan interactions she welcomes and which she rejects, “When I’m on stage when I’m at a work event when I’m doing press…I am at work. In any other circumstance, I am not in work mode. I am clocked out. I don’t agree with the notion that I owe a mutual exchange of energy, time, or attention to people I do not know, do not trust, or who creep me out just because they’re expressing admiration,” she continues, “I am specifically talking about predatory behavior (disguised as “superfan” behavior) that has become normalized because of the way women who are well-known have been treated in the past.”

Chappell Roan has allegedly been the victim of real-life stalking involving someone who runs one of her biggest fan accounts, a person named Nova. It’s not known if this is their real name, it could be a reference to Roan’s hit single “Red Wine Supernova”. This person has allegedly found Roan’s real name, home address, and the names and addresses of her family members.

She finishes her message by saying, “I want to love my life, be outside, giggle with my friends, go to the movie theater, feel safe, and do all the things every single person deserves to do. Please stop touching me. Please stop being weird to my family and friends. Please stop assuming things about me. There is always more to the story. I am scared and tired. And please don’t call me Kayleigh. I feel more love than I ever have in my life. I feel the most unsafe I have ever felt in my life.” Chappell Roan also turned the comments off for this post saying that it “isn’t a group discussion.”

Conclusion

Despite certain negative reactions to her boundaries, Chappell Roan isn’t letting her fans dictate how she should be able to live her life. Her message is very clear; she wants to be able to live her life like anyone else. She wants her work to be separate from her life and she’s contributing to a conversation that celebrities have been having for years. It seems, however, that she is unafraid to speak boldly and assert herself where she sees fit.
