In many hip-hop discussions, Big Sean is often left in the shadows. He is arguably one of the most underrated rappers of all time and has been consistently overshadowed by his peers. To his credit, even he is aware of the conversations around his placement in most top rapper lists as he’s never shied away from addressing them in his music.
Rappers Drake and Kendrick Lamar controlled the summer with their epic back-and-forth of dissing each other. This reignited arguments regarding the best rapper of all time. At one point, Big Sean’s name was put in the discussion, but for some reason, it never stuck. Still, the lack of mention in most people’s best rapper discussions has only fueled him, which may explain why he chose now to focus on his music again.
The Buzz Surrounding ‘Better Me Than You’
Since the rap beef between hip-hop’s most prominent rappers still has everyone’s attention, the entire industry has been affected. For instance, less popular hip-hop artists would be forced to push their releases back to avoid direct competition with the diss records. Likewise, some hip-hop artists have even dropped diss records as well to take advantage of the new attention that the beef generated.
That’s why Big Sean releasing his next album now is interesting because it’s a risk as people may be too entertained by the rap beef to take notice. With that said, he officially releases his long-awaited sixth studio album, Better Me Than You, on August 9th. Considering that Big Sean’s last album, Detroit 2, came out in 2020, the expectations are high. The anticipation that’s been growing for four years continues to intensify as his latest album’s release approaches.
Behind Big Sean’s Mini Documentary
In addition to the release date, he also released a teaser for the album, including two singles titled Precision and Clarity, as well as a mini-documentary also named Clarity. In the documentary, he reflects on his new journey into fatherhood and discusses how to remain grounded despite the pressures of fame.
Furthermore, the mini-documentary has behind-the-scenes footage of Big Sean working on music, which may be on his next album. Studio footage also reveals popular rappers like Lil Yachty, Tyler the Creator, and Cole Bennet alongside famed producer Hit-Boy, which only adds more intrigue to the rapper’s latest effort and overall comeback.
Drake and Kendrick Lamar Steal Big Sean’s Momentum

Regarding Kendrick Lamar, in particular, rumors of any animosity between him and Big Sean have spread in many rap discussions too. In fact, Hip-Hop fans have long speculated that the cause of their alleged beef stems from Lamar’s iconic verse on Big Sean’s song, Control, where Lamar would call out Big Sean alongside other popular rappers at the time by name.
Since then, Kendrick Lamar seems to have overshadowed Big Sean as they both tend to drop projects around the same time. With Kendrick Lamar being a bigger name, it unfortunately means that Big Sean’s projects get overlooked, which gives further credibility to the rumors. Moreover, the theories that his latest freestyle on the “On the Radar” podcast contains subtle disses directed at Kendrick Lamar continue to circulate even though they have no credibility either.
Did Kanye West Leak New Album?
Besides Drake and Kendrick Lamar’s beef, Kanye West fans may be attempting to take attention away from the album as well. In the same “On the Radar” freestyle, these fans would take offense to alleged lyrics they believe attacked Kanye West. Due to fan outrage over the lyrics, the unfinished version of Big Sean’s album would suddenly be leaked.
Following the leak, speculation that Kayne West was responsible grew louder, eventually reaching Big Sean’s attention. Despite hearing the scathing remakes made by Kanye West against him in a previous interview, Big Sean still responded to the accusations by denying any rumors to clear Kanye West’s name of any wrongdoing on Instagram Live.
Big Sean Aims to Reclaim Spot for Best Rapper
Despite the album leaks, Big Sean decided to remain upbeat by teasing music with great producer, The Alchemist, instead of showing any hurt or anger he may feel. Along with the teaser, the rapper released another song from the album titled Yes on July 18th. In the song, he addresses his critics for not including him on their best rapper lists by dismissing them altogether.
Comparatively, he has been jumping into the featured artist space. If his recent collaborations with Jessie Reyez are any indication, then it’s safe to say that he hasn’t lost a step following his hiatus. After a lengthy 4-year gap since his last album, Better Me Than You seeks to bring Big Sean back into the spotlight.
