5 New Singles to Check Out This Weekend of October 17th

Your new singles weekend playlist is in! This week’s up-and-coming Houston rapper, Monaleo, Lizzo, Chris Brown, Usher, Dan + Shay, T-Pain, and former Spice Girl Melanie C made the top of the list this week. The theme all the songs have in common this week, besides the weekend wildcard, is that each song has a nostalgic sound, sending you back in time.

Chris Brown: “It Depends (Remix) Featuring Bryson Tiller, and Usher”

The song already has a viral dance that has been dominating the internet and was already a banger, but we all know Chris Brown is always full of surprises. Early this morning, Chris Brown released a new single, the remix to “It Depends,” adding R&B superstar Usher.

Usher is the only artist who would have done the song justice. “It Depends” samples Usher’s 1997 hit “Nice and Slow.” “It Depends” remix opens with Usher spelling out his name, an iconic line from the song “Nice and Slow.”

“The New Flame” singers recently reunited at Chris Brown’s Breezy Bowl tour in Atlanta, and Breezy gave the “Burn” singer his flowers. The Atlanta show is not the first time the artist has shared the stage, but it is the first time since rumors surfaced about the “Yo” singer allegedly putting paws on Usher at a skating rink.

Monaleo: “Freak Show” Featuring Lizzo

Rapper Monaleo is a Houston rapper who is one to watch out for and the wildcard song of the week. Her new single, “Freak Show,” featuring Lizzo, released today, is a sexy, upbeat southern rap anthem. “Freak Show” features Monaleo’s classic Houston sound, complete with bars on bars, but it is also laid-back compared to her usual hype energy on other songs. Lizzo brings her vocals to the track with a seductive melody but quickly switches up with an X-rated rap verse.

Monaleo has been in the music scene since 2021. The “Putting Ya Dine” rapper recently went viral for livestreaming her all-pink fairytale wedding to rapper Stunna 4 Vegas.
If you want to get to know the “Sexy Soulaan” rapper, listen to her interview. She recently sat down with the Breakfast Club.

T-Pain: “Club Husband”

T-Pain is still looking for love in the club, but not with the workers this time. Back in rotation this weekend is T-Pain with his new single “Club Husband”. Fans online have been asking for the song to be released after a snippet of the song went viral on TikTok this summer.

The “Bartender” singer excels at crafting lyrics that create a storyline, and “Club Husband” employs a similar style, reminiscent of T-Pain’s early 2000s songs. In a TikTok clip, the “Buy U a Drank ” rapper said he tried to release the song three years ago, but people hated it because it sounded like music from 2007.

But today is a new day, and that retro, happy feel to the song that people complained about is what makes the song stand out, because it doesn’t sound like current R&B music.

Melanie C: “Sweat”

It is never too early to get that summer body ready, and former Spice Girl’s new single “Sweat” is the ideal song to add to any workout playlist. The music sounds like a workout tape over a disco club beat. ” The Wannabe” singer sings,

Stretch, two, three, four.
Five, six, seven, eight
I’ll make you, I’ll make you
Reach

Keep your eyes on me
Speed it up, slowly (Stretch)
Get your heart pumping
I’ll make you, I’ll make you sweat (Reach)

Reading this entry this week is questionable because the description may sound boring, but by next summer, this song will be a viral workout song. It will make a great transition from changing workout outfits or a sound to use for fitness content.

Dan+Shay: “Back To December”

Tay Tay is in her showgirl era, but if you missed old Taylor Swift, listen to Dan + Shay’s “Back To December” cover. This is another song that was requested by fans to be released after a viral moment online.

Earlier this month, when practicing for a soundcheck, the duo used “Back To December to warm up, and they quickly gave the fans what they wanted and released their version of the song.

This week, instead of adding a long list of songs to your playlist, let’s switch it up and add an EP to the weekend listen party. After is a Los Angeles band with members  Dorsey and Graham Epstein.

They released their After EP 2 today, featuring six songs that fit the ‘driving down memory lane’ theme this week. The band’s sound is influenced by early 2000s rockers like Michelle Branch and Avril Lavigne, featuring a pop-rock and trip-hop style.
