5 Energetic Hair Metal Bands to keep you Pumped

Hair metal rock on hand

When you think of music that gives you an adrenaline rush, chances are one of the first genres that comes to mind is hair metal.  Whether you’ve tried to karaoke along with Van Halen’s “Jump” or you wrap up your Friday work to Def Leppard’s tunes, you most definitely have heard of hair metal. There are many names in hair metal that you may not be familiar with, but you really should check them out.

Warrant

Probably the more well-known name on this list, the most popular lineup consisted of frontman Jani Lane, guitarists Erik Turner and Joey Allen, bassist Chris Vincent, and drummer Steven Sweet. The outfit found debut fame in 1989 with album “Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich”. The album’s successful single, “Heaven”, reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 in the Rolling Stone.

Great White

Starting in Los Angeles in 1977, the band’s most popular personnel consisted of frontman Jack Russell, guitarists Michael Lardie and Mark Kendall, bassist Lorne Black, and drummer Audie Desbrow. However, they did not receive attention until a decade later. In 1987, the outfit saw success with the album Once Bitten with the single “Rock Me.”  Only a couple of years later, in 1989, they saw more success with their album, “Twice Shy.” The top single, “Once Bitten, Twice Shy,” received a lot of radio play,  even making it to the Billboard Hot 100.

Tesla

Starting in Sacramento, California, in 1984, the band’s consistent lineup includes frontman Jeff Keith, guitarists Dave Rude and Frank Hannon, bassist Brian Wheat, and drummer Steve Brown. The band’s  1986 debut album, “Mechanical Resonance,” saw the trackModern Day Cowboy” make it to the top 40. A few years later, in 1989, the band’s second album, ‘”The Great Radio Controversy,'” saw hits of their songs such as “Love Song.” Surprisingly, in a rarity of hair metal bands, Tesla still performs to this day with the original lineup.

Kix

Stylized as “KIX,” the band consists of frontman Steve Whiteman, guitarists Brian “Damage” Forsythe and Ronnie “10/10” Younkins, plus bassist Donnie Purnell and drummer Jimmy “Chocolate” Chalfant. Though starting in Hagerstown, Maryland, in the late 1970’s, the band wouldn’t see success until 1988. Their biggest album, “Blow My Fuse”, with the pumped-up song of the same name, was a sure hit. Also, from the same album, “Don’t Close Your Eyes,” is a must for metalheads who enjoy a good, impassioned love song. The band decided to call it quits in 2023, according to the Baltimore Banner.

Slaughter

Referring to the 1988 American Las Vegas hair metal band, Slaughter’s main formation included frontman Mark Slaughter, guitarist Tim Kelly, bassist Dana Strum, along with Blas Elias as the drummer. Slaughter’s 1990 debut album “Stick It To Ya” had their most famous song, “Fly to the Angels,” get to #19 on the Billboard Hot 100, according to WOTL news. Since then, the band has undergone many employee changes, including adding Jeff Blando as the guitarist after Tim Kelly was tragically killed in a 1998 automobile accident. Interestingly, unlike many of the others included in this list, the band still performs to this day.
