To celebrate the live-action adaption of Lilo and Stitch, Disney revealed a titular character. Fans who attended D23 in Anaheim witnessed the unveiling of a CGI version of Stitch. The alien caused a system reboot in the studio before breaking the on-stage screen. He greeted all by shouting his catchphrase, causing the audience to cheer excitedly. Experiment 626’s appearance has sparked varied reactions, with some feeling hopeful and others expressing concern.

Fans are praising Stitch similarly to how they praised the redesign of the CGI Sonic the Hedgehog. The titular alien looks exactly like how he does in the animated original. There are no exaggerated features or similarities to real-life animals like koalas or dogs. But all fans agree he still looks ‘cute and fluffy’.
Some people have interpreted his CGI makeover as a negative sign. Many people think that this new live-action remake is unnecessary and unwelcome. Others say Disney is ruining its masterpieces by revising them into these new versions. Frequent examples of this are 2019’s Lion King and 2022’s Pinocchio. Either way, 626’s accurate look has pleased many fans and gives them hope.
Much of the criticism could stem from Disney’s past live-action remakes. They have been successes, cinematic flops, or in the middle. Some of these films have caused people to question Disney’s ability to recapture the magic. On the other hand, the studio has made movies that have left fans and critics happy. The new Lilo and Stitch could be as impressive as the original.
Lilo And Stitch Is A Legacy
Premiering in theaters in 2002, the original Lilo and Stitch became a massive success. It grossed over $270 million worldwide and earned an Oscar nomination. The film featured talented actors alongside Sanders, Carrere, Hill, and Lee. Daveigh Chase, Kevin McDonald, Ving Rhames, and David Ogden Stiers were among them. The film also starred Zoe Caldwell and Kevin Michael Richardson. These stars made this movie a masterpiece and enabled it to kickstart something incredible.
The popularity of the instant masterpiece allowed it to spawn a variety of spinoffs. Stitch! The Movie acted as the pilot for Lilo and Stitch: The Series. The series ran from 2003 to 2006, concluding with the television film Leroy and Stitch. Lilo and Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch was a direct sequel to the first. The new live-action remake has a lot to measure up to in this extensive Ohana. It will need help from an impressive cast to pull of its premiere.
The Stars of Stitch’s New Movie
Showcased in the D23 reveal, Chris Sanders will reprise his titular role. Playing opposite him as Lilo will be Maia Kealoha and Sydney Agudong as Nani. With them will be Kaipo Dudoit, playing Nani’s love interest, David Kawena. In the upcoming movie, Zach Galifianakis will depict Stitch’s creator, Dr. Jumba Jookiba. Billy Magnussen will be portraying Agent Pleakley, a supposed Earth expert and mosquito fan. Courtney B. Vance will join them as the mysterious social worker Cobra Bubbles.
Other veterans from the animated film will be in the movie alongside Chris Sanders. Tia Carrere, Nani’s voice actor, will take on the role of Mrs. Kekoa. Mrs. Hasagawa from the original movie, Amy Hill will play a new character Tūtū. Jason Scott Lee, who was David, will join the cast in a currently unknown role. This ensemble of talent could help this remake be on par with its predecessor. Either way, Stitch makes his grand return to theaters in the summer of 2025.
