It’s been a while since we heard anything about our favorite Kryptonian in red and blue. But that’s because the man James Gunn has been hard at work in developing the latest iteration of Superman Legacy. The first to launch in the upcoming DCU that may put the comic books of old back on the map along with Marvel.
Care to take a gander at what we’re going to be dealing with? Here’s a quick look. Soak it all in:
“Up, Up and Away,” Said the Latest of Superman Legacy
And, seriously, what is going on out that window off the horizon of Metropolis? Something catastrophic, perhaps. Oddly enough, our friend Kal-El doesn’t look as “super” as we’d expect him to be. Sort of somber, instead. In fact, he’s the exact replica of how Ben Affleck looked as Batman during interviews.
Come On, Benji, You’re Still so Quiet and Introspective. Come On!
Ah, well, you know, he was Batman. And we’d enjoy Batman smiling and doing an Irish jig as much as we’d expect Frodo to twerk off Mount Doom, so that would never happen.
But why does David Corenswet look like that in the recently released image? Intriguing. Christopher Reeve, he’s not (which, honestly, that’s fine). Henry Cavill, he’s not (and I guess I’m okay with that, too). But you’d expect the Man of Steel to be like lightning when there’s an oddly colored meteorite from Hell zooming around the sky of Metropolis.
Instead, he’s slowly…. Lacing…. Up his boots.
And if you look closely, this is a Kryptonian who’s seen better days. We’ve never seen that S on his chest look that beaten up before. Ever. So that should tell you something.
James Gunn’s Superman Legacy is Going to Wow Us
And, honestly, I’m not surprised. After all, Gunn behind this DC wheel has put all cylinders on full throttle, and we’re breaking the sound barrier. This was the guy who took Guardians of the Galaxy across universes, and we can’t expect anything less. He’s a lover of comics. So you know he’s got Superman Legacy going in the right direction.
Don’t forget about the rest of the cast slated to join in on this epic:
- Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane
- Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl
- Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific
- Wendell Pierce as Perry White
- Nicolas Hoult as Lex Luthor
- Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern (!)
And that’s just a shred of what we know.
But wait…. Green Lantern? Oh, hell, yeah.
Expect Superman Legacy to Leap Tall Buildings in a Single Bound On….
DC’s tweet states it will be in theaters on 7/11/25.
That’s more than 365 days away. Crap.
Can we wait that long? Why not just thrust kryptonite down my throat and make me gag? Oh, well. But you can’t blame DC and company, Gunn-helmed, wanting to take their sweet time in bringing out perhaps a fresh take on the Man of Tomorrow. After all, as much as I enjoyed the DCEU and Zack Snyder’s work, the negativity soured a lot of it for me.
At the end of the day, I just enjoy comics — especially when it’s about being a superhero.
I guess I’ll wait.
