Star Wars The Mandalorian and Grogu

Star Wars Fans’ Wish List: 5 Epic Movie Ideas That Should’ve Preceded The Mandalorian and Grogu

Star Wars returns to the big screen next year with The Mandalorian and Grogu. While fans are, of course, excited to see the continuing adventures of Din Djarin and adorable Grogu, it’s also . . . well, a movie based on a Disney+ show. As such, the idea isn’t quite as grand and epic as fans would like the galaxy far, far away’s theatrical return to be. There are plenty of other movie ideas that would be more exciting. Here are five Star Wars movie ideas that could have preceded The Mandalorian and Grogu.

5 Star Wars Movies That Should’ve Preceded The Mandalorian and Grogu

1. A Solo Sequel

Solo: A Star Wars Story is perhaps the most underrated Star Wars movie of all time. While it ended with Han winning the Millennium Falcon, the ending also left plenty of doors open for continuing our favorite scoundrel’s story. We could see how Han gets tangled up with Jabba and ends up with a price on his head. In addition, Qi’ra’s character could be further fleshed out in her new life working for Darth Maul. Perhaps she could pretend to want to get back together with Han while secretly doing Maul’s bidding. Come on Disney, give us more Han!

2. An Old Republic Movie

Travel back to a thousand years before The Phantom Menace, when the Republic was in its infancy, and the Sith were still an open threat to the Jedi instead of a hidden one. The movie could write itself. Perhaps Disney is hesitant to make a movie set in this time period because of the highly beloved Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic video games, but this would be a such a rich era in which to set a movie. We could see a whole new side of the Star Wars galaxy.

3. Rogue Squadron

This movie was in production, but it was sadly cancelled. Little is known about the movie except that it would have been directed by Patty Jenkins, and it would have centered around the X-Wing squadron in the Rebel Alliance. We could have gotten more development for favorite background characters like Wedge Antillies and Wes Janson. Seeing as how the movie shared a name with an acclaimed Star Wars video game series, this could have been something special. While Jenkins has said that she’s still attached to the movie, it’s unlikely that it will ever see the light of day.

4. New Jedi Order

Many people were disappointed with the ending of The Rise of Skywalker. They disliked Rey taking the Skywalker name, the movie forgetting about Ben Solo after he dies, and Rey seeming to have no direction at the end of the movie. Well, there’s supposedly a follow-up in production, tentatively titled New Jedi Order. In addition to seeing Rey and Finn rebuild the Jedi Order, the dyad between Rey and Ben could be further developed, with Rey still being bonded to Ben’s spirit even after his death. Unfortunately, the movie keeps getting delayed, and it’s highly likely that it will eventually be cancelled.

5. A Darth Vader Movie

“Wait,” you say, “didn’t Vader already have an entire film trilogy with the prequels?” Well, yes, but hear me out. Hayden Christensen had the idea that Disney could follow up Revenge of the Sith with a movie or series that explores Vader adjusting to his new life as Palpatine’s Sith apprentice. His grief from losing Padme would still be raw and fresh, and he would have to get used to living in the breather suit for the rest of his life. It could be an incredibly dark, emotional film experience.

Final Thoughts

There are plenty of reasons to be excited about The Mandalorian and Grogu, but it probably won’t set the world on fire. While I’ll definitely rush to see it in theaters, I would much rather have one of the movies listed above. There are probably plenty of Star Wars fans who are already planning to wait until The Mandalorian and Grogu comes to Disney+. If Disney really wants Star Wars to make a splash again, perhaps an extended episode of a TV show isn’t the most interesting thing for the franchise’s grand return to theaters.
