The latest Sonic the Hedgehog 3 trailer has arrived. In what is likely the last full-length look at the movie before its release date in about three weeks, Sega provided yet another look at what is shaping up to be an explosive end to the year in film. The first two Sonic films have developed a devoted audience due to their evident appreciation for the source material and their increasing quality. The third movie seems poised to take everything to a new level, capping off the film trio with a potentially explosive bang. Here’s what we learned from the new trailer which featured some fun Easter Eggs.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Trailer Ramps Anticipation Up
Early Monday morning, Sega dropped the presumably final trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3. This wasn’t a surprise drop, as the company had confirmed beforehand that they’d be doing this. It was, however, stunning in how much better it made the film look. The first trailer was more than enough to get everyone interested. They introduced Shadow the Hedgehog and showcased what is sure to be an epic battle between Team Sonic and Shadow and the Robotniks. Speaking of the Robotniks, this trailer shows how shortlived Dr. Robotnik’s turn to the good was.
In the latest Sonic the Hedgehog 3 trailer, Dr. Robotnik and Gerald are teaming up and using Shadow to rule the world. The first preview indicated that Team Sonic would go to Dr. Robotnik to get help with Shadow, but eventually, Robotnik turns back to evil and teams up with his grandfather. They and Shadow provide a lethal threat to Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails in this sequel. The sheer scale of this movie seems to triumph over the first two, and one of them involved a Super Sonic scene. In a brief clip, there seems to be a ray from Earth destroying the moon, so there could be serious ramifications from this movie.
Easter Eggs in New Sonic Trailer
It wouldn’t be a Sonic movie without a bunch of Easter Eggs. The first two were filled with video game references and even nods to lore/details from the community. They have both been impressive in that regard, but the third film might have ramped that up. The Sonic the Hedgehog 3 trailer itself is full of clever nods. First, Shadow carries a gun in the trailer. This is a reference to the controversial Shadow the Hedgehog game in which the titular protagonist carries weapons and uses them. It also references how much darker the third film seems to be going.
There is a reference to the portal scene from Sonic 06 as well. The trailer opens with the Chao Garden, a major point for the franchise and a bit of a surprise given the overall tone of the movie. It’s the first time Chaos have been seen in live-action. Sonic Unleashed also got a nod to a level design. The first trailer had a bunch of references to Sonic Adventure 2, which seems to be the source material for the most part. The second trailer adds to that, giving even more references to Mario Robotnik and Shadow’s tragic origin.
Speeding to a Conclusion
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is effectively the final blockbuster of 2024, which has been a great year for film. Wicked, Dune: Part Two, Challengers, The Wild Robot, Transformers One, The Apprentice, and so many others have provided audiences with stellar entertainment. The bar is high, but I truly believe this movie will go down as one of the best this year. The first trailer had me unbelievably hyped, and the latest Sonic the Hedgehog 3 trailer is a painful reminder that I still have to wait about three weeks to finally see the battle of the century.
