Sebastian Stan Talks Playing Donald Trump In New Biopic Film The Apprentice
Sebastian Stan is known by many fans for his work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, the actor has starred in many other films and is about to debut his greatest undertaking yet. His new biopic film, The Apprentice, has him playing former president Donald Trump. The business mogul is one of the most polarizing figures in the world today, making the task of portraying him on screen more difficult. Stan talked about finding the humanity in Trump as he told the story of his rise to power.
Sebastian Stan On Playing Donald Trump
The film won’t touch on the Donald Trump we know today. It is set in the late 70s and early 80s when he was still finding his way in the business world. Jeremy Strong plays his mentor, Roy Cohn, who was instrumental in instilling the principles that many have come to know from the business mogul. Stan talked to Entertainment Weekly about the role. He wants viewers to not just come away with a better idea of where Trump came from, but also a better idea of who they are themselves.
“It’s important for us to explore perhaps the darker elements that live within all of us so that by bringing them into the light, we can understand how to have a better relationship with them rather than suppressing and avoiding and pretending that they’re not there. I think that’s where the value is because I don’t think anyone is on a moral high ground.”
He added a somewhat controversial quote, saying, “I think that there’s a Trump in all of us to some extent.” Critics of the film do not think Trump and Cohn should be shown in a positive light as they have done some questionable things as well. However, the point of the movie is to show a different side of the person.
Relating To The Person
Sebastian Stan revealed he appreciates many of the character traits of Donald Trump. More specifically, his desire to win at all costs. Stan immigrated from Romania at the age of 12 and had to overcome a lot.
“I understood that drive to rise, to overcome at whatever cost, and to win. I understood that simply from my own very, very small, humble beginnings with the American dream. We love a winner in this country. It’s a fact that, to me, felt relatable in many ways.”
Actors often have to try to get into the mindset of the character they are playing. Whether the person is real or fictional, understanding what motivates a character helps in portraying them. There will be much controversy around this film, especially with the election about a month away. However, the studio hopes viewers can look past that and enjoy the movie. The Apprentice will debut in theaters on October 11th.
