Vanity Fair Releases Images from Russo Brothers’ 2025 Retro Comedy “The Electric State”
The Russo Brothers have spent their time securing projects for the foreseeable future. The dynamic duo is set to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, directing the next ensemble Avengers projects, Doomsday and Secret Wars. The upcoming Marvel projects will be released in 2026 and 2027 respectively. In the meantime, Joe and Anthony are already in post-production for their action-adventure comedy The Electric State, starring Chris Pratt and Millie Bobby Brown. Vanity Fair recently shared photos from the film featuring the A-listers mentioned earlier and their interesting set of co-stars.
The Russo Brothers’ Next Big Blockbuster “The Electric State”
Primarily known for their work on hit television series including Arrested Development and Community, the Russo Brothers’ careers burst into the stratosphere with the release of the MCU smash hit Captain America: The Winter Soldier. They went on to maintain that momentum with the subsequent entries Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. According to Box Office Mojo, the latter of the two ensemble pieces garnered more than $2.7 billion at the box office. The Electric State is their next megahit set to release in 2025 and based on the graphic novel of the same name by Simon Stålenhag.
Stålenhag’s novel takes place in a post-apocalyptic version of 1997 and tells the story of Michelle, a teenage girl armed with a shotgun who becomes close with a uniquely designed robot named Skip. The two travel through the western United States with a wanderer during a war between humans and robots, similar to the Terminator films, in search of Michelle’s estranged brother and a home in San Francisco. Vanity Fair has shared official photos from the Electric State showcasing a sneak peek of the upcoming sci-fi feature with the cast and crew on the Russo Brothers’ adaptation.
The officially released images showcase a rough world like what Stålenhag’s book describes. Questionable hair pieces aside, the costumes and what look like practical effects for the machines help ground the story in realism, which has always been one of the Russo Brothers’ strong suits. Streaming titan Netflix has secured the rights for the Russos’ take and will premiere the retro film sometime in March 2025.
The Russo Brothers’ Cast of Superstars + Their Adaptation Origins
As mentioned, Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown and Guardians of the Galaxy leading man Chris Pratt have joined the Russos’ next film. Millie will be playing Michelle and Pratt co-stars as Keats, a shady human-machine war veteran who also works as a smuggler. More big names have joined, including Oscar-winner Ke Huy Quan, future Captain America Anthony Mackie, The Mandolorian star Giancarlo Esposito, and two-time Golden Globe-winning character actor Stanley Tucci.
It was the screenwriters for the Russo Brothers’ past Marvel movies, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, that brought Simon Stålenhag’s lauded book to their attention. Joe Russo, one-half of the superstar siblings, shared what made them pursue the book for their next big-budget tale. “The texture in the images was really powerful, and it felt like a story about broken families and broken people trying to find each other in a broken world,” Joe shared. “It also felt resonant to us, raising our kids in a technology-heavy world.”
