2025’s Official Freaky Friday Sequel: Exciting News!

Freaky Friday is one of the greatest Hollywood franchises spanning television, film, and even Broadway musicals. As a whole, the franchise is known for its body-swapping premise between parents and their children who gain understanding for each other by literally walking in each other’s shoes.

Despite being a successful franchise, its status of producing quality films waned, according to critics and public perception. However, everything changed with the 2003 film, Freaky Friday, starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan, as it became a commercial hit for Disney and brought back attention to the overall franchise.

With a big thanks to Curtis, the long-awaited Freaky Friday sequel has been made official. Since October 2022, Curtis has been pushing for the sequel film, even creating her own premise. This premise was that she would be a grandmother and Lohan, who plays her daughter in the film, will have a daughter of her own.

After Curtis’ appearance on The View where she expressed interest in a Freaky Friday sequel, Lohan would later confirm that she had been approached with the idea. Similar to Curtis, Lohan would show the same excitement to return for a Freaky Friday sequel to play alongside Curtis again.

Freaky Friday 2 Gets Its Director and Writer

On March 29th, 2024, Curtis hinted at a Freaky Friday sequel by tagging Disney and Disney Plus in a reposted selfie with Lohan from a reunion months prior. As a result of the post, Disney would finally announce to the Hollywood reporter that Freaky Friday 2 was in development.

Alongside Curtis and Lohan, who will reprise their roles from the 2003 film, Nisha Ganatra has been chosen to direct the film. Also, it’s safe to say that Dollface writer Jordan Weiss would be a part of the film as well, based on another photo that Curtis posted in regards to Freaky Friday 2, showing Curtis, Ganatra, and Weiss enjoying time together.

The Cast and Plot of Freaky Friday 2

For more exciting news, most of the original cast will make a return for the sequel. Once again, Mark Harmon and Chad Michael Murray, who played the love interests of Curtis and Lohan’s characters respectively, will come back. Remember Slip Knot? The rock band will make another hit as Haley Hudson and Christina Vidal are returning as well.

What’s more? Lucille Soong and Rosalind Chao, who played the mother and daughter respectively with the body-switching magic, will come back. Included with the original cast, new yet familiar faces such as Maitreyi Ramakrishnan (Never Have I Ever), Manny Jacinto (Top Gun: Maverick), Julia Butters (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), and Sophia Hammons (Under Wraps) will make their debut.

Regarding the plot, it seems that ruining a mother’s marriage is a family tradition in the Coleman household. Years after the body-switching incident of the first film, Lohan’s character, Anna, finds herself in conflict with her fourteen-year-old daughter Harper, who wants to stop her mother’s marriage. If you’ve seen the last film, then you’ll have an idea of what to expect next.

When Is Freaky Friday 2’s Release Date?

Although Disney confirmed the movie’s release in 2025, its exact date wasn’t stated, but don’t get too sad, as it has already begun filming. Moreover, the sequel is planned to be released in theatres and not as a Disney exclusive movie that was speculated. With a 2025 release date, you’ll have time to prepare and should even watch the classic original 2003 film.
