New Moana 2 Trailer Takes the Internet by Storm

moana 5

Fitting, right? Because Moana was all about facing storms. And maybe becoming one! That’s the case with the just recently released Moana 2 trailer, fresh from Disney. We have to say we’re psyched, but not just because we get to see Maui voiced by Dwayne Johnson yet again.

Oh, no, no, there’s a whole new set of tirades associated with this animated explosion that personally, frankly, I wasn’t even prepared for. I’ll just make it plain and simple for all of you — as while I’m thoroughly excited to see something like this hit theaters on November 27, 2024, questions abound in my mind about the way waves abound about the sea at night.

Like Weren’t We Supposed to Get Updates on a Live-Action Moana Flick?

Moana on the beach

What happened to talk about that? Is that now off the table? Are we relegated to the rumors and fake trailers such as this one you see? Not complaining (well, maybe a little), because a true Moana sequel gets me all the more fired up anyway: new adventure, new demigod antics, the same demented chicken (and now we’re adding a pig into the mix). I like it.

But this Moana 2 trailer seemingly came out of utterly nowhere, and it’s especially surprising given this important fact:

Disney Is Not Known for Its Sequels — Like, at All! So Moana 2 Is a Rarity

Well, at least on the silver screen, anyway. Disney was more known for releasing sequels directly to video. We have, like, four (or five, if you’re counting the live one) different Aladdin movies, four different Cinderellas, and quite a few Little Mermaids out there. Oh, yeah, and a ton of Tinkerbells.

For theaters, though? We got Planes: Fire and Rescue, Ralph Breaks the Internet, and Frozen 2. Well deserved, in my opinion.

But the fact remains: Disney doesn’t seem to like releasing sequels in theaters. So seeing this for one of its other animated features — which, granted, was still a knockout success in its own right — was so random and way out on left field that it really started to make me wonder if Disney’s switching up their tactics some.

Does This Mean We’re Going to See Other Disney Sequels Now?

In all fairness, Inside Out 2 is on its way. That’s Pixar, though. And Pixar ain’t a stranger to sequels (can anyone say Toy Story??).

But, seriously, should we then expect Encanto 2? What about a sequel on Raya and the Last Dragon? Or Zootopia? That might be fun. Will this be an ongoing trend like what we were seeing with classics getting the live-action treatment? I’d be welcome to that.

Further expanding on these universes, building up on the intellectual properties of these stories: that would only seek to prosper the House of Mouse further, in my opinion. Personally, the direct-to-video route was so last century, a la Blockbuster Video archaic sentimentality that I just don’t see Disney’s properties flourishing on those cabinets, much less on the Disney+ streaming platform. But that’s just me.

So, What Were Your Thoughts on the New Moana 2 Trailer?

Did your jaw drop? Or were you like meh?

Was it even a little bit of a surprise? Especially given how we’re so close to November already, and this is all we have on Moana 2? Just watch the trailer yourself. It’s more like a teaser. Not much there, especially in terms of a story, so I’m thinking this is all hush-hush until we get closer to Thanksgiving. Primo tactic there in driving up some interest on a property that everyone’s going to start digging on.

And that’s the way it should be, in my opinion. Trailers don’t give much away. They tease. Very much like how Moana’s teased by the ocean itself and all its wonders. Care to ride this storm when it gets into theaters? Let me know in the comments below!

(Until then, though, I’m eager to see The Acolyte — major Star Wars fan here, just sayin’.)
