‘Tis the season for romantic comedies! I don’t know about you, but when the weather gets warm, I get the urge to watch feel-good rom-coms. There are so many romantic comedy movies out there to choose from nowadays that it can be a little daunting to find the right one to watch. Netflix has swept in and produced multiple wonderful book-to-movie rom-coms, and today, I’m bringing you a list of 3 that are worth watching.
Love At First Sight
Based on Young Adult author Jennifer E. Smith’s novel titled The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight, Netflix brings actors Jameela Jamil, Haley Lu Richardson, and Ben Hardy to the screen in this wonderfully witty and heartfelt movie. Love At First Sight follows Hadley and Oliver as they meet in an airport, then lose touch and go out of their way to find each other again. It has everything I look for in a romantic comedy, including a great soundtrack.
One of the things that makes this movie stand out is the unique narrative style – Hadley and Oliver’s story is told through a narrator who includes statistics and facts about the characters and their interactions. It adds a fun and cute element to the movie that elevates it to the next level.
To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before
Another film adaptation, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before is based on Jenny Han’s book of the same title. We follow protagonists Lara Jean Covey (Lana Condor) and Peter Kavinsky (Noah Centineo) on their adventures as fake boyfriends and girlfriends – until things spin out of control. Lara Jean is faced with choices she never thought she’d have to make.
This movie has 2 sequels, titled “To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You”, and “To All The Boys: Always and Forever”. The movie also has a spin-off Netflix Original series titled XO, Kitty, which follows Lara Jean’s little sisters on her adventures in Seoul, South Korea.
Along For the Ride
When compiling this list, I found a common theme among the movies that I’ve enjoyed – they are all book-to-movie adaptations. Along For the Ride is based on a wonderful young adult novel by Sarah Dessen with the same title. It follows Auden, a girl who’s just graduated high school and moved to spend the summer before college with her father. When she has trouble sleeping, she goes on walks in town, where she meets Eli, who takes her on late-night adventures.
Auden and Eli each have their own personal things to work through, but together they find a way to unpack their baggage and form a bond that gets them through the summer. This movie is heartwarming, cute, and funny all wrapped into one.
Love at First Sight, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, and Along For the Ride are cozy, comforting, and romantic. Summer is the perfect time to watch romantic comedies, and with this list of 3 Netflix Original rom-coms that are worth watching, you’ll be on your way to a movie night in no time.
