Ridley Scott’s Napoleon movie is a fun watch and an enjoyable piece of media, but it is not without its issues. For example, if you are a historian or a firm believer that films should be historically accurate first, you may have issues with some of the portrayals and artistic liberties the film takes. If you want to see some cool moments of action and excellent character drama, you will probably enjoy it. However, if you are someone who walks into a film based on history expecting historical accuracy, then you’d best to look elsewhere.
Napoleon on the Big Screen
Historical films have always been a bit hit or miss. The consensus amongst viewers seems to be that they’re either amazing or a complete dumpster fire. Which one, Ridley Scott’s Napoleon, depends on who you ask, whether they value historical accuracy or artistic integrity, and how fun a film is to watch more. Getting complete adherence to history and an enjoyable viewing experience in a film has always been a bit of an ask.
One point that the movie does a great job of conveying, however, is Napoleon’s larger-than-life persona. As a commanding presence on the battlefield and in politics, Napoleon dominates the scene to the point where the other characters always take a bit of a side role whenever the big man himself is on screen.
Failings or Artistic Choice
One point that can be made about places where the film doesn’t live up to its potential is that the politics often feel disconnected from the battles and grandiose achievements throughout the experience. During the film, it often feels like Napoleon’s battlefield successes and blunders exist independently of the political consequences of those battles. Moreover, major political figures who played gigantic roles in the era’s events are seemingly just there long enough to establish they exist, and their interactions with Napoleon and the world of the movie seldom have time to be anything but window dressing.
Final Thoughts
The Napoleon film is an interesting jumble of contradictions. It seems to simultaneously be a fascinating historical reenactment of Napoleon’s campaigns while not giving the deserved spotlight to many of the important figures of the era. While focusing on the titular character makes a degree of sense, it almost feels as though Ridley Scott zeroed in on Napoleon too much, to the detriment of many other figures of the era who also deserved their time in the spotlight. The film also tends to put the battles and politics in their own boxes and have them seldom intersect with the consequences of major campaigns, which are rarely felt whenever the movie delves into politics.
