We all know Taylor Swift has taken the world by storm with her world-renowned Eras Tour and brand new album, The Tortured Poets Department. Did you know that The Tortured Poets Department is just one of her 11 albums that can be matched to a movie with similar vibes? Today, I’m taking you through each of Taylor Swift’s eras and providing you with a list of 11 movies that every Swiftie should watch – one for each of her albums.
Taylor Swift – Little Women (2019)
Director Greta Gerwig brings Louisa May Alcott’s coming of age novel Little Women to the screen again with this beautiful adaptation. Following the March sisters in the aftermath of the Civil War, Gerwig paints a picture of girlhood and growing up – which are the same vibes that Taylor Swift’s debut album provide through songs like Teardrops On My Guitar and Tim McGraw.
Fearless – Valentine’s Day (2010)
It wouldn’t be a recommendation list for Swifties if I didn’t include the movie that Taylor Swift herself starred in during the Fearless era. Valentine’s Day features a mosaic of love stories that each showcase the holiday as something different. It’s funny, romantic, heartfelt, and it features Taylor Swift herself, which means every Swiftie needs to see it at least once.
Speak Now – The Princess Bride (1987)
The Princess Bride is a classic fairytale movie that encompasses the humor, passion, and whimsy that the Speak Now album portrays. Follow Princess Buttercup and her true love, Westley, as they face evil princes and dangerous creatures in order to be reunited with one another. The film features actors like Mandy Patinkin and Robin Wright, and is a fun adventure for swifties of all ages.
Red – Begin Again (2013)
“On a Wednesday, in a café, I watched it begin again…” – Taylor Swift sings in her song titled the same as this movie. Begin Again is a musical drama that encompasses the idea of second chances and not giving up. Following struggling singer-songwriter Greta and musical producer Dan, the main characters teach each other about life, love, and how to keep going when you feel like giving up.
1989 – The Broken Hearts Gallery (2020)
The Broken Hearts Gallery is one of those movies that is painfully bad, yet oh so good. We follow an art gallery assistant in her 20s in New York City who is a major emotional hoarder. She keeps everything from her past relationships as a reminder of what she had. When her life is turned upside-down, she turns her hoarding problem into a passion project where she meets someone who just might teach her how to let go of the past.
Reputation – The Devil Wears Prada (2006)
Life in New York City can be hard, and when you’re faced with the challenges of working for the elite upper class, sometimes you have to get down and dirty and say “Look what you made me do”. If you want the ultimate reputation-esque story, The Devil Wears Prada is a classic comedy-drama featuring renowned actresses Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway.
Lover – To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before (2018)
Lara Jean Covey has never had a boyfriend – but she has written letters to her crushes, professing her love to each of them. When those letters are suddenly mailed out, her life is turned upside down. She finds herself living the life of a version of herself she never knew existed. The Lover era is all about – you guessed it – love! To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before is the perfect coming-of-age movie about love, friendship, and sisterhood.
Folklore – Pride & Prejudice (2005)
The folklore era is about stories of love and heartbreak. What better movie to associate with folklore than Pride & Prejudice? Based on the Jane Austen classic with the same title, this movie follows Lizzie Bennet, her sisters, and her friends as they seek love and marriage during Georgian times. It will make you laugh, cry, and laugh again. If there’s one movie on this list you just absolutely must watch, it is this one.
Evermore – When Harry Met Sally (1989)
Despite it being filmed in 1989, When Harry Met Sally is a timeless romantic comedy that will have you kicking your feet in giddiness, laughing, and then crying all within the same few moments. Taylor Swift has always said that evermore, to her, is a fall and winter album. Swifties can follow Harry and Sally through various falls and winters of their lives as they navigate the complex relationship between a man and a woman in the 80s.
Midnights – Barbie (2023)
When I thought of Anti-Hero, the lead single from Midnights, I immediately thought of Barbie. Directed by none other than Greta Gerwig, Barbie is a satirical commentary on what it’s like to be a woman in a man’s world. It’s witty, emotional, and all too relatable. If you’re looking for a movie that fits the Midnights era, this is it, swifties!
The Tortured Poets Department – The Dead Poet’s Society (1989)
I couldn’t make this list without including The Dead Poets Society – especially since 2 of the actors from the movie are featured in Taylor Swift’s most recent music video for her single Fornight ft. Post Malone. If you want something funny, academic, and that will make you cry, The Dead Poet’s Society is the perfect choice and reflects the TTPD era exactly right.
There are so many movies out in the world that fit each of Taylor Swift’s eras very well. Whether you’re a fan of romantic comedies, light academia, or adventures in girlhood, there’s a movie for every Swiftie on this list. I hope you find some inspiration from these films for your next movie night. But, if all else fails, you can just watch The Eras Tour movie on repeat like I do.
