She is Moana, and she is back on an all-new adventure. Announced back in February of this year, the first teaser trailer released in May. Moana 2 is set to hit theaters this November. In this anticipated sequel, Auli’i Cravalho is returning to voice Moana, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is the voice of the demigod Maui.
The Legacy of Moana
The first film, released in 2016, follows the title character, Moana, as she sets out to return to the heart of Te Fiti and save her island as the crops begin to die and the fishermen are unable to catch fish. She learns that the hardships were caused by Maui, who stole the heart of Te Fiti, whom she reluctantly had to team up with. Along the way, she discovers the power within herself and the power of the elements.
Moana was a smash hit when it was released, grossing more than $680 million at the global box office. The film was nominated for Best Animated Feature Film of the Year at the 2017 Oscars. Lin Manuel Miranda also received a nomination for “How Far I’ll Go,” the Best Original Song. Since its release, Moana has also received notoriety from the Disney World theme parks. In late 2023, Epcot unveiled the walkthrough attraction Journey of Water, showing guests the water cycle’s natural beauty.
What to Expect in Moana 2
Moana 2 takes place three years after the first film. Moana and Maui are reunited for a new adventure after Moana receives an unexpected call from her voyager ancestors. Together, they will set out across the Pacific Ocean into the dangerous open sea for an adventure like no other.
Aside from Carvahlo and Johnson returning as Moana and Maui, Alan Tudyk is returning to voice Hei Hei, the strange rooster who becomes Moana’s companion in the first film. Temuera Morrison will also return to voice Chief Tui Moana’s father, and Rachel House will return to voice Gramma Tala Moana’s free-spirited grandmother. Newcomer Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda will also be in Moana 2 as Simea, Moana’s rambunctious little sister.
Miranda will not be returning for the Moana 2 soundtrack. Popular TikTok artists Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, who were initially noticed for their Bridgerton-inspired music, will take over the soundtrack. Ron Clements, John Musker, and Don Hall, who directed the first movie, did not return to Moana 2, which David G. Derrick Jr., Jason Hand, and Dana Ledoux Miller have directed.
Final Thoughts
Over the last eight years, Moana has rightfully become a Disney classic. While it seems a few years too late, Moana 2 will surely be an exciting sequel to the box-office hit. Although some might be sick of sequels, Moana is definitely one of them that deserves a second film. There’s no telling how far she’ll go this time. Moana 2 will be released in theaters on November 27th. It has not been announced when it will be available on Disney+, the company’s streaming platform.
