Marvel Studios To Slow Down Massive MCU Output in 2025

Quantity over quality has recently been the name of the game for the MCU. Marvel Studios has been churning out a ton of content over the last few years, though it has slowed a bit in recent months due to the strike and other interruptions. Moving forward, they are going to slow themselves down and try to reverse that trend and return to quality over quantity.

A chief complaint among even the most dedicated of Marvel fans has been that the MCU just has too much going on. From 2008 when it was first created to 2019 with Avengers Endgame, there were 22 movies. One came shortly after Endgame to make it 23 projects in 11 years. In the four years from to 2023, there were ten movies and 12 seasons of television. That was just too much for most of them to be any good, but Marvel Studios promises they’ve learned.

Even before the strikes impacted things, Marvel had vowed to slow down on the MCU. What was once the biggest franchise in movie history lost so many of its original fans due to lackluster projects and oversaturation. 2024 was going to be a slower year anyway, but then it lost some things due to the strikes and other delays. But in 2025, they are manually slowing down.

According to a report from Variety, they will be doing no more than three movies every year and no more than two shows. Five projects is a lot for one year, but that’s the most they will do. Most years probably won’t house that many projects anyway. That’s what Disney CEO Bob Iger, who only recently returned to that position, has said on the matter.

Bob Iger Confirms Slowed Marvel Slate

“We’re slowly going to decrease volume and go to probably about two TV series a year instead of what had become four and reduce our film output from maybe four a year to two, or a maximum of three,” Iger said. This will all take shape in 2025 when the CEO says Marvel has a couple of good movies to come out before they begin focusing on the Avengers again.

Disney has a lot on its plate right now, but Iger is focused hard on restoring the MCU’s image. He said, “Overall, I feel great about the slate. It’s something that I’ve committed to spending more and more time on. The team is one that I have tremendous confidence in and the IP that we’re mining, including all the sequels that we’re doing, is second to none.” The MCU was once the biggest movie brands, perhaps of all, but it has lost some of its allure. They’re going to try and fix that.

It was always inconceivable that a franchise that got so big would be able to continue smoothly without ever experiencing a downturn or being forced to end. The MCU won’t end, but they did see that downturn and it was sharp. Many fans have complained in the years since that Endgame was really the end of it all, though a select few projects that followed have been of similar quality. Iger aims to get back to that level and bring fans back home.
