Dirty Dancing
Starring Jennifer Grey and Patrick Swayze, Dirty Dancing chronicles the romantic relationship between two young individuals who meet at an arts camp one idyllic summer. In the film, Grey’s character, Frances, is from a wealthy family destined for a life of service and a socially acceptable marriage to a doctor. The summer before she is due to leave for the Peace Corps, Frances attends a summer camp in upstate New York, having no idea that it’s about to change her life.
While at the camp, Frances meets dance instructor Johnny Castle (Swayze), and the two fall in love. Dirty Dancing is popular for its forbidden love story, and to this day, it is still known for its famous quote, “Nobody puts Baby in the corner.” It has all the vibes of a classic 80s movie, so if that’s your jam, be sure to check out Dirty Dancing!
Hairspray
Hairspray follows the main character, Tracy Turnblad, after she wins a spot on a highly coveted musical TV show. Throughout the film, Tracy battles the established social hierarchy of the television world, setting out to bring passion, fun, and dance to the show, much to the chagrin of the show’s reigning dance queen, diva Amber Von Tussle. Hairspray stars James Marsden, Nikki Blonsky, Zac Efron, Brittany Snow, John Travolta, and Amanda Bynes. Hairspray is a feel-good summer movie with themes of body positivity, racial integration, celebrating individuality, confidence and self-identity, and staying true to yourself. Notorious for being one of the most popular musicals of all time, Grease stars John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John as Danny and Sandy, who embark on a whirlwind summer romance during the 1950s. It has all the elements of the classic trope of the “bad” boy and “good” girl falling in love – Can the duo put aside their differences and make their love story work? Grease is known for popular songs “Summer Nights,” “Hopelessly Devoted to You,” and “You’re the One That I Want”.
Step Up
Per the synopsis, Step Up follows a young man named Tyler who “receives the opportunity of a lifetime after vandalizing a performing arts school, gaining him the chance to earn a scholarship and dance with an up-and-coming dancer, Nora.” After landing in hot water with the law, bad boy Tyler Gage is given community service at a nearby arts center. During his tenure there, he meets hip-hop dancer Nora Clark, who inspires him to pursue dance as an art form and means of expression. The film stars Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan, who were married for almost a decade after meeting in the 2006 film. The themes of Step Up include self-expression, second chances, and breaking barriers.
Footloose
Kevin Bacon stars in Footloose as a teenager from Chicago who is in for a rude awakening when he moves to a tiny Midwestern town that has banned rock music and dancing. Can Bacon’s character bring new life to the old-fashioned town? Will he be able to loosen them out of their conservative ways?
Per Netflix, Footloose tells the story of “A rural town where dancing is outlawed, in which a big-city teen rebels against authority in hopes of inspiring his new friends to kick off their Sunday shoes.”. While the original film came out in 1984, it also spawned a revival, which was released in 2011 and depicted a more modern retelling of the classic film. Kenny Loggins wrote the hit song “Footloose” for the film.
