Romance movies are having a moment, and the new trailer for Netflix’s latest film, Lonely Planet, features Academy Award Winner Laura Dern and Liam Hemsworth. The filmmakers announced the film in April 2022 and released the first trailer on September 12. The trailer teases a dramatic and spicy age-gap romance between two writers trying to find their place in the world and their life decisions.
What is Lonely Planet About?
Lonely Planet follows recently single-established writer Katherine Loewe, portrayed by Dern, who sets off to Morocco for a writers’ retreat as she struggles to write her next novel. There, she meets Owen Brophy, portrayed by Hemsworth, a younger man on the retreat with his girlfriend, Lily Kemp, played by Diana Silvers, who is questioning his current relationship and the decisions he has made in his life so far.
Susannah Grant, who received an Academy Award nomination for her screenplay on the Erin Brockovich movie and also wrote and directed the Netflix series Unbelievable, is the writer and director behind Lonely Planet. The film will also star Adriano Gianni as Ugo Jaconelli, Sosha Goren as Ada Dohan, and Heebah Shah as Jesminder Malik.

In an interview with People Magazine, Dern stated about the plot of Lonely Planet: “I love that the story focuses on connection and intimacy and feeling truly seen. It’s a romance of self-discovery as much as it is deeply knowing another person.” Hemsworth also added in the same interview, “The story is not just about the romance between two people; it’s about personal growth, self-discovery, and the complexities of relationships. The characters are relatable, flawed and navigating the beauty and challenges of love in a setting that’s visually stunning and culturally rich.“
While some viewers might be tuning in for the film’s promised spicy content, Lonely Planet seems to have more to it than its romantic aspect. It promises a thoughtful, in-depth look at where life brings us and the harsh truths of the complications that come with romance and relationships, making it a more raw and relatable movie for viewers to connect to.

The movie will premiere on Netflix on October 11th and will only be available on the streaming platform. It is rated R for sexual content and brief nudity.
