James Gunn is ready to get the DC Universe back on track. After years of failed attempts to compete with Marvel in the movie universe, the studio hired Gunn to rework the universe. There is a lot of optimism from fans as he put together the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and the newest Suicide Squad movie. Fans have been wondering who will be a part of the new universe, and Gunn seems to confirm the presence of a fan-favorite villain, Deathstroke.
James Gunn Hints At Deathstroke In DC Movie Universe
James Gunn is known for being active on social media. One fan asked in the comments on Gunn’s Instagram post about Deathstroke. “Please wink if you have plans for Deathstroke, I am waiting for my boy to shine for so long,” the fan wrote. The director responded very quickly with a winking emoji. While this could mean aboslutely nothing, it does seem to indicate Slade Wilson will be appearing on the big screen in a big way.
The last time we saw Deathstroke on the big screen, it was an end credits scene on a boat with Lex Luthor. Fans got very excited but when the DC Universe films flopped, it ended those plans. Obviously we have no idea how Slade Wilson would come into the universe though the most obvious seems to be through a Teen Titans movie. However, fans will likley not care as long as they can see the villain on screen.
Can Gunn Save The DC Universe?
While the MCU has had some recent struggles, they have dominated the comic book movie sphere for the past 15 years. Despite DC having some of the most popular characters in pop culture, they cannot find a way to translate it to the big screen. They have had successful series, video games, and animated movies but the silver screen offerings have been subpar.
Hiring James Gunn was the right move. One of the reasons Marvel has been so successful is because Kevin Feige has been at the helm. While there are different directors, actors, and storylines, Feige is at the top making sure the continuity is there. While DC has tried to copy Marvel in many ways, they have not had this until now. Given his track record, Gunn should be able to usher in a new era of DC movies.
I for one am excited to see what James Gunn can do. While I love the MCU, I want to see characters like Green Lantern, Superman, and Batman get their time to shine in a connected universe.
