Godzilla x Kong Supernova Wraps Filming in Moab- A Massive Milestone
Well, it’s official. “Godzilla x Kong Supernova” has wrapped production, and where did they cap off this cinematic monster brawl? Moab, Utah. Now, if you’re scratching your head and wondering why in the fiery depths of cinematic irony someone chose the red-rocked landscape of Moab to host the Monsterverse’s next installment, you’re not alone. But hey, it’s Hollywood—we left logic at the door a while ago.
Moab, Utah, Joins the Monsterverse Legacy
Moab might not sound like the most obvious backdrop for radioactive kaiju and a really angry primate, but there’s something charmingly odd about imagining Godzilla stomping through tourist-heavy Main Street while Kong swipes a triple-scoop cone from some unsuspecting passerby. Apparently, the production kept local businesses’ signage intact, which means we could get some unintentional advertising for “Sue’s Diner” or “Big Mike’s Rock Emporium” nestled in the heart of all the chaos.
According to the Moab to Monument Valley Film Commission director, Bega Metzner, it’s a rare move for productions to do that. Typically, businesses just get generic-looking storefront covers that scream “Hollywood’s best attempt at ‘real life.’” But not here. If you squint during the movie, you might see the actual spirit of the town blended into the destruction. Charming, right?
Why Utah? Oh, the Heat…
Oh, and did we mention they filmed during Moab’s hottest months? July and August. For those of you unfamiliar, this is when the sun gets particularly sadistic, with temperatures hitting the triple digits regularly. But hey, sweating through their Monsterverse magic under an unforgiving sun is just another day on a Hollywood set.
It does make you wonder if someone whispered “tax credits” during the project pitch. Utah’s growing reputation as a film hotspot might have had something to do with it. After all, seven or eight productions in a single season isn’t half bad for a state that mostly comes up in your outdoor vacation plans.
The Monsterverse Keeps Growing (And We’re Here for It)

Speaking of the Monsterverse, it’s been a fascinating franchise to keep tabs on. It’s not just about massive creatures slugging it out (though, to be honest, that’s the draw). This franchise somehow pulled off something rare in the cinematic universe world: staying alive even when the odds weren’t always in its favor.
2014’s “Godzilla” was widely praised. Then came the even more successful “Kong: Skull Island”. Things were good, and then… “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” happened. Yikes. While the trailers hyped it as some epic showdown, its reception landed somewhere between “meh” and “I can’t believe I paid for this.”
Then there was “Godzilla vs. Kong” thrown into a pandemic-wracked world, pulling off a hybrid release that probably saw just as much action on pirate sites as it did in theaters. Yet, somehow, the franchise endured. This very resilience feels almost… kaiju-like, doesn’t it?
Godzilla x Kong Supernova’s Star-Studded Cast
Oh, and in case you forgot amidst all the Godzilla vs. Kong stomping talk, this one’s got some serious star power. Dan Stevens reprises his role, joined by fresh faces like Kaitlyn Dever, Delroy Lindo, Sam Neill, Jack O’Connell, and Alycia Debnam-Carey. Hollywood seems intent on making sure the human side of these movies doesn’t fade entirely into the kaiju carnage. And honestly? Props to that.
Stranger Things star Matthew Modine, 66, is set to appear in the upcoming MonsterVerse installment, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, and according to him, the chance to “meet” Godzilla was a big reason he signed on.
Speaking during a panel at Tampa Bay Comic Convention, the Full Metal Jacket actor shared his amusing experience on set, revealing that he had hoped to interact with the legendary kaiju, only to realize the creatures weren’t actually present during filming.
“I just worked on Godzilla x King Kong: Supernova. That was pretty exciting. Oh, to work with Godzilla,” Modine said. “When I was working on it, I kept waiting. I was like, ‘Wait a minute, Godzilla’s not here!’ I’m looking at Godzilla and King Kong as if they’re there.”
Modine added that his theater training helped him navigate the CGI-heavy scenes. “When you go to drama school, you do exercises where you have to see things that aren’t there. So I was happy to pretend that Godzilla was there,” he joked. “I did the movie because I wanted to meet Godzilla.”
Godzilla x Kong: Supernova is directed by We Bury the Dead filmmaker Grant Sputore and written by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings screenwriter David Callaham. While specific plot details remain under wraps, Deadline reports the film will introduce several new human characters alongside the iconic Titans, who face a massive, world-ending threat.
March 2027 Can’t Come Soon Enough
Circle your calendars, folks. March 26, 2027, is when we’ll finally see if all this Moab heatstroke and fiery inter-monster drama was worth it. Maybe we’ll learn why Moab’s iconic landscape was worth all that sunscreen. It’s safe to say this latest installment has a lot resting on its giant, scaly shoulders. Will the next chapter in the Monsterverse continue its cinematic reign, or will it stumble under the sheer weight of its colossal ambition? Either way, we’ll be front and center with our popcorn.
And hey, if this Hollywood production taught us one thing, it’s that a little slice of local charm, some blistering heat, and a healthy dose of giant monster lore might just make movie magic.
