The Five Nights at Freddy’s franchise continues on the big screen. The popular video game adaptation will get a sequel in 2025. The original game came out in 2014 and has inspired so much lore behind it within all the games as a franchise.
The second chapter, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, will likely be the inspiration for the next movie of the same name. However, there are plenty of potential follow-up movies or plot elements available from other games for this next film. This is just the beginning of the expanding FNAF world on the big screen.
FNAF: Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 Confirmed for Fall 2025

The early stages of the Five Nights at Freddy’s sequel are underway. FNAF 2 was announced last week at CinemaCon with a tentative Fall 2025 release date. Along with Universal, Josh Hutcherson, who plays the main character Mike, confirmed this, stating he is “dying to get back on set.”
This is according to Variety, as the former Hunger Games star mentioned it three months ago in an interview.
“I know they’re in the process right now of nailing down the story, and they want to get going as soon as possible,” Hutcherson said. “Obviously, the fans are amazing and die hard. For me to be a part of it was so cool and phenomenal.
“We hoped it would connect with audiences,” he continued. “But I don’t think that anybody, even on our side of things, expected it to really connect the way that it did. I’m dying to get back on set. Emma Tammi, our director, was fantastic, and it was such a fun world to play in. I’m excited to see what they are doing next.”
Matthew Lillard, who plays William Afton, recently said this to The Hollywood Reporter about FNAF:
“My middle kid called me crying because they were so happy for me when the movie came out. They went to the movie with all their friends, and I think they were very proud of me being a part of it.”
He mentions how this role revived his acting career and is grateful for the pivotal role in Five Nights at Freddy’s.
“For me, it’s been a very humbling moment in my career. I’m 53, and I’ve had a couple franchises in my career that have been successful. I [had thought] maybe that part of my career is dead and over, and that’s fine. To get this opportunity out of the blue to have another franchise that could make a real impact on my career is humbling and exciting, and my kids are thrilled.”
Lillard also appeared in the popular 2007 rom-com, What Love Is.
FNAF: Five Nights at Freddy’s 2023 Review
So, I have exposure to some of the FNAF lore but have only watched some gameplay of the video game and haven’t played it myself. I thought the movie was what I expected as a streaming movie, even if it was in theatres. It was surprising to see for a PG-13 movie, that it didn’t shy away from the violent gore.
Young adults wanted the film to dive into rated R territory, but it has a mixed audience. Most of the video games are played by kids and teenagers. It is a fine line this movie has to be between and mix a cohesive storyline. The 2023 horror mystery thriller is kind of what I expected for a video game adaptation with the basic premise the game has at the very start.
The plot is about Mike, a troubled security guard who works at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. This pizzeria has something strange going on in his first night shift with the animatronics, as evil lurks at the pizzeria. It is pretty mixed by fans of FNAF games, even newcomers mostly think it is a decent film but nothing serious.
Despite negative critic reviews, it was a grossing success, earning $297 million as Blumhouse’s highest-grossing film globally. It surpassed M. Night Shyamalan’s infamous Split film, which came out in 2016.
FNAF: Creative Lore Expansion Possible with Sequel
The FNAF movies are adaptations of the American supernatural horror games created by Scott Cawthon. He co-wrote the screenplay with director Emma Tammi and Seth Cuddleback.
Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions produced the first film and will for the second movie with Universal Pictures. Not much, if anything is known about the plot of this sequel. The one thing we do know is the main cast of Hutcherson as Mike, Lillard as William, Elizabeth Lail as Vanessa, and Piper Rubio as Abby will all return.
FNAF 2 will likely begin filming in July and according to The Hollywood Reporter, director Tammi teased something about the second film, stating this last year.
“We have some loose ends that I think are going to have to come back in a sequel to be tied up.”
2024 Movie RECOMMENDATIONS: Late Night With The Devil, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire
It will be interesting if the sequel follows the original as a Peacock original film, exclusively streaming on that platform and releasing in theatres. Another sequel that is getting hype is Happy Gilmore 2 with Adam Sandler, the follow-up to the 1996 classic.
Since it is coming out next year, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 will not have to compete with the likes of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which is coming this December. Sonic 3 was also announced at CinemaCon last week.
