Every Great Transformers Movie: Ranked

Transformers started as toys for kids, and now they’re box office-smashing movies. The franchise revolves around alien robots from the planet Cybertron, who can transform into cars. There are movies, television shows, comic books, and more.

Since 2007, audiences have seen the Transformers go to war with their human allies against their enemies, the Decepticons. Every movie brings something new to the series, whether it’s a new subgroup of aliens or cleverly revising history for backstories. They’re endlessly fun and action-packed, with science-fiction twists. If you need a guide, here’s every Transformers movie ranked.

#7: Transformers: The Last Knight

The 5th movie of the 7-movie franchise premiered in theaters in 2017. Mark Wahlberg starred as Cade Yeager for a second time and found himself involved in another Transformers versus human conflict.

In King Arthur’s time, the Transformers gave Merlin a staff to beat the Saxon army, and in the present day, Cade, a brainwashed Optimus Prime, and his enemy Megatron are all racing to find the staff first, each for their own reasons. That’s only a small portion of what happens in this movie.

Transformers: The Last Knight is in 7th place due to its overwhelming number of details. There are ancient transformer societies, Megatron is alive in another transformer’s body, Quintessa, the creator of the planet Cybertron, is introduced before turning Optimus Prime into evil Nemesis Prime, and Cade is running around with a teenage girl, a British earl, and a college English professor.

Overall, it was entertaining. But there was way too much going on and too many cast changes.

#6: Bumblebee

Sam Witwicky’s lovable companion came to Earth long before the original Transformers movie. In 1987, Bumblebee crash lands in California after Optimus Prime sends him to Earth during a Cybertron civil war against the Decepticons. He befriends an 18-year-old girl named Charlie and she helps him as he runs from Decepticons and the army.

It was a fun sequel that only made viewers love Bumblebee more, and it provided background on a civil war between the Decepticons and Transformers that almost every movie references.

#5: Transformers: Age Of Extinction

Transformers: Age of Extinction is Mark Wahlberg’s introduction to the Transformers franchise. In the previous movie Dark of the Moon, starring Shia LaBeouf as Sam Witwicky, Transformers destroyed Chicago in a battle for a weapon that was previously deserted on the moon. Now the CIA is dedicated to imprisoning all Transformers, and Cade Yeager has just found Optimus Prime.

With his daughter Tessa, her boyfriend, and Optimus Prime, they fight to defeat Megatron, who has been reincarnated into Galvatron by a company that wants to weaponize the transformers for humanity’s gain.
The complete cast change from the first 3 films was a tad disappointing, but it was still as action-packed and mesmerizing as ever.

#4: Transformers: Dark Of The Moon

As new movies are released, viewers learn that the Transformers are involved in big moments in American history. In Transformers: Dark of the Moon, the Apollo 11 astronauts set out to find technology from Cybertron called the Pillars. In the present day, the Decepticons have stolen it to bring Cybertron to Earth and enslave the human race.

Sam Witwicky races against time with his new girlfriend Carly (replacing Megan Fox as his love interest) to stop the Decepticons from conquering their planet, destroying Chicago in the process. The plot and the revisionist history made this movie pretty fantastic. The likable characters and their comedic timing made it even better.

#3: Transformers

The first movie in the franchise came out in 2007 and blew audiences away. High schooler Sam Witwicky is gifted his first car by his dad, a yellow Camaro that is actually a robot alien called Bumblebee. Sam discovers the AllSpark, the source of life for Autobots and Decepticons. With the leader Optimus Prime, Sam fights to protect the AllSpark from the evil Decepticons.

It was a great introduction to the world of Transformers and their elaborate history. Fun Fact: Transformers was the 3rd highest-grossing movie of 2007.

#2: Transformers: Rise Of The Beasts

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts takes viewers back to 1994. Noah Diaz, played by Anthony Ramos, lives with his mother and little brother, struggling to find a job when he is dropped in the middle of a war between the Maximals and the Terracons.

The Maximals are animal versions of Autobots and Terracons are a group of Decepticons. The villain is Scourge, a terracon controlled by an evil world eater called Unicron. They fight for ownership of a key that can open portals to different planets and Noah, along with a museum employee named Elena, fight with the Maximals to protect the key.

The addition of two new groups of Autobots and Decepticons was exciting, and the action was heart-stopping.

#1: Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is one of this writer’s all-time favorite movies. In the second film, Sam Witwicky is being hunted by Megatron. When he finds a piece of the AllSpark, it implants the Autobot’s language in his mind and, with it, the location of another piece of technology: the Matrix of Leadership.

Megatron wants to free a Decepticon called The Fallen, who can’t be released from prison on Cybertron until the last Prime dies. After Optimus Prime is murdered, Sam, his girlfriend Mikaela, and the army race to prevent The Fallen from harvesting the sun with the Matrix and destroying Earth.

It’s full of emotion, twists, and amazing fight scenes.
