Actor Drew Starkey supports the steamy scenes in the new film “Queer,” in which he stars alongside Daniel Craig. Starkey plays Eugene Allerton, a young man who becomes involved with debauched junkie expat William Lee (Daniel Craig) in Mexico City. The actor is no stranger when it comes to LGBTQ+ storylines; he had previously starred in the coming-of-age film, “Love, Simon,” which saw an LGBTQ+ relationship at the forefront. Such a role undoubtedly helped Starkey with his latest project, “Queer”.
“Queer” The Movie
Adapted from William S. Burroughs’ novel, “Queer” stars Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey and follows William Lee (Craig), a drug-addicted American ex-pat in his late forties, as he leads a solitary life amidst a small American community in Mexico City. The arrival of Eugene Allerton (Starkey), a young student, stirs William into finally establishing a meaningful connection with someone. However, their relationship becomes strained when Lee decides to synthesize and sell Ayahuasca, and the two travel to South America in search of the psychotropic drug.
The film’s director, Luca Guadagnino, is no stranger when directing art films that contain gay relationships at the forefront. According to Variety, Guadagnino made a name for himself by directing the hit romantic drama, “Call Me By Your Name.” The film, which starred Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer, went on to score four Oscar nominations, including one for Chalamet, according to Variety.
And just like “Call Me By Your Name,” “Queer” has its’ fair share of steamy scenes. Drew Starkey talked to the Hollywood Reporter about his commitment to the process of filming even the sex scenes. Starkey told the magazine that before he and Craig filmed their intimate scenes together, the two actors “jumped into it, just grabbing and throwing our bodies on top of one another, rolling around, getting intermingled.”
“Rolling around on the floor with someone the second day you met is a pretty good way to get to know them,” Starkey quipped. The actor added in the interview that doing preparatory exercise “unlocked something subconsciously, gave us a level of comfortability and familiarity with each other so that everything after that was very easy.”
Starkey Claps Back
Any movie with steamy scenes is going to invite criticism. When talking about such potential naysayers, Starkey said, “I think as American audiences, we can be very uptight about that stuff, sex scenes, whatever, which is strange,” to the Hollywood Reporter. He further pointed out the hypocrisy of people calling cinematic sex scenes “taboo” while being “fine” with erotic material “on our phones.”
“I’m glad sexuality is coming back to the theaters because I think it’s imperative we integrate sexuality into our stories. It’s the way to understand ourselves better,” Starkey said. “You learn so much about a person by looking at how they are intimate with one another.”
Conclusion
According to them.com, in July, the Venice Film Festival director Alberto Barbera told the LGBTQ news site that Craig had “put himself on the line” with his performance in Queer, acting in “sex scenes that are quite full-on.” The article continued to report that A24 acquired the U.S. distribution rights for “Queer” at the end of August, meaning film audiences will likely be able to watch it in theaters soon.
