Disney’s Lion King Turns 30 on 4th of July Week

The Lion King is one of the most iconic movies of its time. Iconic in cinematic terms not just as an animated film. And is rightfully remembered as one of the greatest in the history of film and is certainly Disney’s best. This 4th of July might be a good time to revisit this classic, and if for some reason you haven’t seen it yet, then the 30th anniversary of its release-that took place just a week or so ago-is a great time to delve into this classic.

And make no mistake The Lion King is a classic. A wonderful story of family, friendship, love, trust, betrayal and glory The Lion King has it all. A near-perfect film that also happens to have one of the best soundtracks for any film. At this point, I reckon the reader has enough reason to watch this movie this 4th of July week. But if you still want more, read on.

Is The Lion King The Perfect Animated Movie?

There are a number of movies that would compete for the spot for the best-animated movie ever made. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) and Alice in Wonderland (1951) would be among them. However, if one is to pick a near-perfect animated film: in terms of story, art style, characters and cultural significance it would be hard to surpass Disney’s 1994 classic.

On a personal note, The Lion King was my first animated movie, one that I watched as a kid, and having watched it, my fascination with the story and the world never ceased. It opened the doors to the wonderful world of animated film, which whilst technically aimed towards children, engaged serious subjects like pride, selfishness, loss and courage in the face of trials. The Lion King had all of it and more. A wonderful story of joy, tragedy, hope, love and victory. A true story of a king.

The Art Style to Match the Story

One of the things that define a great film is when the core elements that make up the venture join together in perfect harmony to make the whole. This is what you get with Disney’s animated achievement. From the opening shots of Simba’s birth to the dark, brooding presence of Scar, to the moments of humor and joy with Nala, to the climatic moments that grip the viewer. It is with good reason that Lion King is considered to be the greatest Disney movie period.

And now 30 years later the movie is still a captivating watch. A powerful story filled with courage and heart it still has the ability to draw in viewers from any age or demographic. And its cultural appeal rightly does not go unnoticed. A film that is a joy to watch and is a wonderful reminder of the Renaissance age of Disney animation that was witnessed during the 1989 – 1999 period.

A Perfect Family Movie

If you are at home for the holidays or are able to catch some time off from work and wish to spend it with loved ones, regardless of age The Lion King is a film that hits the right numbers on many levels. A powerful story inspired by William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, with great characters that build on the Campbellian archetype, wonderful animation, and an amazing soundtrack that has, for me, the best song in any movie. It is a near-perfect or a perfect film. Now go watch it.
