Death Note Killer Within: Plans To Revive The Supernatural Thriller

Death Note is an intellectual property that needs little introduction in the world of anime and manga. While it isn’t the newest kid on the block, its manga origins date back to 2003 and ran until 2006, with its anime adaptation following soon after in the same year. Death Note was a phenomenon in the world of anime, with its popularity so great that soon other media adaptations followed. The last significant adaptation was the Americanized take on the story in 2017.

Now news is breaking of a new Death Noted project that could possibly be in the works. Shueisha, the big Japanese publishing company that was behind the original Death Note manga, has registered a “Death Note”-related trademark that is titled “Death Note: Killer Within.” This is exciting news for Death Note fans who have been starved of content from the beloved IP.

What could be in store for fans?

Naturally, there are a number of questions fans will be asking at this point. What form will this new ‘Death Note: Killer Within’ take? Will it be the continuation of the manga, penned and drawn by Tsugumi Ohba? Or are we looking at a Netflix adaptation of the anime series into a fully-fledged live-action series? Or could it be something else? Many questions remain.

However, one thing is for certain anime fans, and fans of the IP in general would be looking for deep, character-driven stories that can bring back the high-intensity conflict between the anti-hero Light and the detective L. This is certainly the case following the somewhat disappointing live-action films from Japan. That did many things right, but it does not come close to the original anime. Even the 2017 Netflix adaption fell short of the original anime’s gripping narrative. So expectations are going to be high with one.

What is death note?

If you are an anime fan, you might as well skip this section. Death Note centers on a mysterious notebook that will cause the death of any person whose name is written on it. A story that draws inspiration from Japanese religion and folklore involves mystical beings called Shinigami who possess this magical notebook. As it happened, one such Shinigami Ryuk, who is so bored, decided to have some fun by throwing one such notebook into the human realm and watching the drama unfold.

And that is exactly what happens. In the hands of Light Yagami, a bright, astute high school student with a sense of justice gets hold of the book. And so begins his mission to rid the world of evil. Or does it? As the fans of the story in manga or anime would know, Light develops a ‘God complex’ that drives him to commit unspeakable acts. The real draw of the story is the conflict between Light Yagami and L, the genius detecting who works to thwart Light’s plans and capture him.

Death note in culture

For those who don’t know, Death Note has a hardcore following in the anime and manga worlds. To this day, it features some of the tightest plot lines and character-driven storytelling to date. Even non-anime fans have heard of Death Note. In fact, its popularity is so great that it has even found its way into theater. The Death Note: Musical premiered in English last year in London. Thus, the appeal of this IP is strong. And it is only natural that the producers add to the lore. A decision that is most welcome.
