The Captain America: Brave New World trailer has fans asking one question after watching: Who is George Washington Bridge? While we haven’t gotten official confirmation on the character, the look says it all. Giancarlo Esposito has been teasing his MCU debut, and many fans hoped he would be playing Doctor Doom or Professor X. However, he looks very cool in the trailer. So, who is George Washington “G.W.” Bridge?
Who is George Washington Bridge?
George Washington “G.W.” Bridge made his first appearance in X-Force #1 in 1991. He was a part of a mercenary group called Six Pack, which was led by Cable. From there, he joined SHIELD and went on some missions with Nick Fury in space. However, he went in and out of SHIELD due to his morals. Bridge is an anti-hero in the comics. While he doesn’t explicitly go against the greater good, his methods are questionable.
A big part of Bridge’s arc in the comics was hunting the Punisher. It became an obsession, and he had multiple failed attempts to capture Frank Castle. It got to a point where he was offering millions of dollars simply for information on the Punisher. In the end, Bridge and Castle had to work together in order to capture Jigsaw and put in him the famed prison, The Raft.
Powers And Abilities
Like most SHIELD agents, George Washington Bridge does not have any special powers or abilities. However, this does not make him any less deadly. He is skilled in hand-to-hand combat as well as well as with firearms. Bridge is a skilled strategist and uses this to his advantage. Similar to Nick Fury, he has contacts all over the world and uses them to his advantage.
MCU Version
Who is George Washington “G.W.” Bridge in the MCU? While we can get an idea from the comics, Marvel Studios may choose to tweak the character. In the trailer, Esposito appears on screen a few times. In each instance, we see him wielding weapons and on a mission to get something done. Based on the limited information, it seems he may play an anti-hero role in Captain America: Brave New World. While he may not be the main antagonist, he may help set the plot in motion.
Giancarlo Esposito looks the part. He has historically done well with characters like this. In The Boys, he goes toe to toe with the powerful Homelander despite having no abilities. It seems he will have a similar role in Captain America: Brave New World. Marvel has a huge library of characters to choose from, and the MCU is starting to bring more of them in. Stay tuned for more information on the character as more information comes out.
