Thousands of movies have been made based on books. The gap between literature and cinema has been minimized after these films. But not every movie has grasped the essence of the book. Novels have very tiny details that can’t be added into films but some of the Directors have made it happen.
There are superhit movies that adapt the storyline from novels and have made a huge impact on the Hollywood industry. Here is a list of some of the greatest novels-to-movie adaptations that have been made to date. While some writers stay true to the author’s original work, others explore previously unseen areas with the source material. But they’re all brilliant.
1) Harry Potter Series

J.K Rowling is famous for her childhood fantasy novels, and she wrote Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in 1997. It was a huge hit as soon as it was released. The last of the Harry Potter series came in 2007.
The seven books in the series are Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
This series was adapted into a movie in 2001 and just like the novels, the movie was a blockbuster. The series has won hundreds of awards in different categories and has also been nominated for Oscar many times.
2) The Twilight Saga
The Twilight Saga series is based on young adult novels written by Stephnie Meyer. The first novel she wrote was in 2003 but it was published in 2005 under the publishing house Little, Brown, and Company. The series originally had four books, but later Midnight Sun was written from Edward Cullens’s POV. The books are.
- Twilight (2005)
- New Moon (2006)
- Eclipse (2007)
- Breaking Dawn (2008)
- Midnight Sun (2020)
The story is about Isabella Swan, known as Bella Swan, the main character. She is roughly seventeen years old. After moving to Forks, Washington, she forms feelings for a boy named Edward Cullen. Bella has no idea who Edward is. But he is 104 years old vampire. Edward is the other main character and has spent decades living in Forks, Washington, with his family as a vampire.
This was turned into movie series in 2008 and the last part came in two parts in 2011 and 2012 respectively. Besides the fact that this series received a lot of bad criticism, the movies were a huge success and made millions of dollars at the box office.
3) The Shawshank Redemption
This movie was a super hit when it was released in 1994. Starring Tim Robbins as “Andy” and Morgan Freeman as “Red”. But very few people know that this is also based on a novel named “The Shawshank Redemption” written by Stephen King in 1982.
“The Shawshank Redemption” tells the story of two guys serving life sentences in prison who become friends and discover a way to overcome sadness. The story is not gloomy; rather, it is full of humor, energy, and love in the bond that develops between Andy and Red. Even suspense and thrill are present. However, most of the movie is a metaphor about clinging to one’s sense of value despite everything.
This movie won a lot of awards in the 67th Academic Awards and also in the 52nd Golden Globe Awards in 1995.
4) The Kissing Booth
The Kissing Booth series was first published on Wattpad in 2011 by 15-year-old Beth Reekles, and it became one of the platform’s most successful stories. Reekles described creating the last installment in her series as an interesting task because she had to write a book based on a movie based on the movies based on her books. It’s mind-blowing, right?
The Kissing Booth is available on Netflix. The young teen love-drama went viral after a young girl named Elle fell in love with her best friend’s elder brother. The ups and downs in her tale drew the audience in, and her love story captured their hearts. Despite the dreaminess of Elle and Noah’s relationship, the film contains elements that make it feel somewhat realistic.
