Subversion’s Unlikely Depths: Lily James and Chris Hemsworth Take the Plunge in Submarine Action-Thriller

Amazon MGM Studios must think so too, because they’re putting Hollywood’s go-to heartthrob, Chris Hemsworth, into the claustrophobic, high-stakes arena of a submarine in Subversion. And they’ve roped in Lily James, yes, Pam & Tommy’s Lily James, to turn up the heat while chasing him down.
Die Hard Meets the High Seas: Can Subversion Stay Afloat?
On the surface, Subversion could feel like it washed ashore from the early 90s “Die Hard on [insert random scenario]” screenplay generator. Don’t get me wrong, a cartel blackmailing a disgraced naval commander (Hemsworth, naturally) into piloting some illegal “oops-can’t-tell-you-what’s inside” cargo across international waters while a fierce Coast Guard officer (James) hunts him down practically screams cinematic chaos. But does it tread into engaging suspense, or does it sink under its own derivative weight?

Lily James vs. the Hollywood Typecast
Lily James, the industry’s chameleon (seriously, is there anything she can’t transform into?), steps into the role of the determined officer tasked with apprehending the rogue ex-commander. She’s gone from corsets in Downton Abbey to bleached-blonde bombshell Pamela Anderson in Pam & Tommy, earning herself Emmy, Golden Globe, and Critics’ Choice nods. Simply stated, she knows how to work her edge. And now? She’s trading 90s nostalgia for government-issued Coast Guard gear.
The casting alone is enough to raise a collective eyebrow. Not because James can’t handle action (she can), but pairing her with Hemsworth, who eternally embodies Larger-Than-Life Hero Guy™, invites the question of narrative balance. Will Ms. Chase-Him-Down be just that, or will Vollrath’s focus keep her role dynamic enough to go head-to-head?
Hemsworth, charming as he is, is leaning dangerously into his niche lately. Do we really need another brooding-alpha-guy-on-a-journey-of-redemption? Based on Amazon MGM’s track record, they know how to toe that line. Submarines naturally add a built-in layer of tension (who knew water could weigh so much?), and a confined space is as much about the characters as it is about the combat. With the right pacing and punchy dialogue, this could end up being a pulse-pounding chess game in deep-sea shadows. Or it could go horribly wrong if the tropes of underwater danger become unintentionally comical (cough… torpedo countdown cliché…).
More Depth Ahead For Amazon MGM?
While Subversion dives headfirst into familiar tropes, it’s another bold move for Amazon MGM’s growing slate of theatrical thrill-rides. It’s strategic too, leaning on Hemsworth’s blockbuster cachet and James’ Intense Female Lead credits to push the “Compelling Action + Faces You Love” formula.
The entire enterprise is set to begin production in September in Australia, with Lorenzo di Bonaventura as the production overlord (ahem, producer) and Patrick Vollrath directing from a script by Andrew Ferguson. The real challenge, however, lies in how Subversion will avoid being… well, predictable. The tensions hemorrhaging out of a submarine thriller are usually as routine as the interiors of the subs themselves, grey walls, red-warning buttons, and a commander barking “Dive, DIVE!”.
But with Subversion’s combo of big names, sneaky-cartel plots, and battle-of-the-wills dynamics, there’s hope it’ll rise above expectations instead of sinking into watery cliché-ville. Either way, someone’s going to yell “We’re running out of air!” at least twice.
What This Means for Hemsworth & James Fans
For one thing, Hemsworth will undoubtedly bring his signature brooding charm and biceps (because what submarine flick doesn’t need muscle power for, you know, carrying torpedoes?).
