Snoop Dogg Biopic Casts Jonathan Daviss as Lead in Upcoming Movie
Outer Banks star Jonathan Daviss has been cast as Snoop Dogg in the upcoming Snoop Dogg biopic, bringing the rap legendโs life story to the big screen. Also set to direct the biopic is Craig Brewer, who has directed movies such as Hustle & Flow (2005), Black Snake Moan (2006), Dolemite Is My Name (2019), and recently Song Sung Blue (2025), which is set to be released on Christmas Day. As of now, this movie is labeled as an โUntitled Snoop Dogg Biopicโ, but I am sure that we will hear a name close to when they start filming.
What This Movie Could Cover
We have seen Snoop Dogg appear as a character in many different films, such as โStraight Outta Comptonโ, the NWA biopic, played by Lakeith Stanfield, and the movie โAll Eyez on Meโ, the Tupac biopic, played by Jarrett Ellis. Weโve also seen Snoop play his fair share of characters in movies like โThe Washโ, โBaby Boyโ, and โPiece by Pieceโ, where he voiced himself as a Lego character. This will be the first feature film where we get a good look at the rapper like weโve never seen him before. Weโll see how he entered the West Coast hip hop game while getting his start at Death Row Records, where he worked with Dr. Dre on his debut album โDoggystyleโ.
Who is Jonathan Daviss?
Daviss is best known for his role as Pope Heyward on the TV show Outer Banks and has also been featured in movies like โEde of the Worldโ, โAge of Summerโ, and โDo Revengeโ. Based on his look and style, he is pretty close to how Snoop looked as a young man. Also, based on his setting skills, he could carry this film and help tell the story of how Snoop became one of the biggest names in the hip-hop world. If anything, it will be interesting to see who else they cast in this movie, as they still need to fill in some key roles in his life.
First Film for Death Row Pictures
This movie will mark the first of possibly many in the history of Death Row as it moves into feature films in partnership with NBC-Universal Entertainment. Snoop has worked with the entertainment company on past projects like The Voice and the recent Olympics, as a host for both. This feature will also be the 3rd outing for Universal Studios as they will focus on the formative years of Hip Hop through the eyes of another hip-hop artist. As of now, there is no set date for when the feature film will be released, but it will be overseen by Senior Vice President of Production Development Ryan Jones and Director of Development Tony Ducret for the studio.
