Neve Campbell Clarifies: Scream 7 Star Patrick Dempsey’s Mark Wasn’t Sidney’s Husband

Gad, gad, gad. At the time when you think that the Screen franchise cannot get any muddier, Neve Campbell throws an additional curveball, which leaves the fans more baffled than ever in Scream 3. The new disclosure? The mysterious character of Mark, played by the actor Patrick Dempsey, was not Sidney Prescott, but he is not her husband in the new Scream 7. Yes, that is what I said. Since Sidney already had enough complications in her life, apparently, the writers felt that she needed some more. And as though being miraculously saved by some killer clown twice was just enough, now we have this to top it all off. Thanks to you fellows.

From McDreamy to Misleading

We have to be frank, news dropped that Patrick Dempsey was coming aboard Scream 7, and there was a collective pile-on effect. The man who made everyone believe in true love on Grey’s Anatomy was sure to be his loving husband, wasn’t he? Wrong. Dead wrong. And to be entirely honest, that assumption speaks more to our desire that Sidney finally get a break than it does to the storyline.

Neve Campbell explains that speculations over the role of Dempsey were completely misled right in the beginning. According to a recent interview, which shook the horror community to its foundations, Campbell suggested that the relationship between Mark and Sidney cannot be reduced to some pure good or some pure evil. The smirk, which is the trademark of the actor, was really our first signal that nothing will go the way it appears.

The internet, as the internet does, had already developed its theories as to the domestic idyll of Sidney. Fan-based discussion forums were rife with news of how refreshing it would be to see the Final Girl living her normal life with McDreamy himself. Spoiler alert: There is no such thing as normal in Woodsboro, and it seems that there is no such thing as direct casting as well.

Why This Revelation Changes Everything

Here is where things get tricky- and by tricky, I mean maddening to longtime fans who just want Sidney to be happy long enough. Evidence Campbell adds that Mark is actually more involved in the story than was believed at first, which in Scream 7 -speak usually means someone is about to get stabbed.

It is almost deliberate cruelty to explain this clarification at this time. Much like when audiences finally thought that Sidney might have a modicum of peace, writers take the rug right out (again). It becomes like watching that person construct a sand carving only to knock it over-only the sand carving is our own emotional stake in the happiness of Sidney.

The Pattern We Should Have Recognized

In retrospect, this should have been anticipated. The Men with whom Sidney falls in love have always fared badly in the Scream movies. Whether in terms of Billy Loomis’ betrayal, or his timely death of Derek, the series has a history of entangling Sidney with what may seem to the layman a more complicated love story than a lye soap opera script. Why should Scream 7  now begin to tear up the rulebook?

Neve Campbell confirms that normal romantic themes would not be found in Scream 7, another way of saying something about poor [jerk] fucking hearts, I suppose. The franchise lives off surprises and upending expectations, and it will do just about anything to get that laugh, even at the cost of our shared reason. It is quite remarkable how they always attempt to come up with fresh methods of torturing their main character and consequently us.

Scream 7’s New Direction

The indication of the personality of Dempsey implies that Scream 7 can run in a different direction than expected. If Mark isn’t Sidney’s husband, then who is he? A recent menace? A long institution? Romance? A connection to the history of Ghost Face? The potentials are infinite as well as frightening.

This red herring also indicates the unwillingness of the filmmakers to reveal plot details to the viewer. In a world of leaks comparable with news leaks being dumped faster than a high school reunion, there can be no greater task than coming up with authentic surprises. Lo and behold, Scream 7 has also been able to make us not know.

The Fan Reaction Nobody Asked For

Social media has been appropriately confused since Campbell’s clarification. Horror fans are passionate in a word, and this news has lit up some arguments that even bring politics to bed. One fan sees excitement in the mystery, another sees his trust in the piece broken because of the deception. It is the type of schismatic response that is likely to make the marketing team giddy.

The reality is that Neve Campbell expresses these points because she has precise knowledge of what she is doing. She knows her fans as well as we know ourselves in that she has spent decades in the franchise. She knows we will tear apart each word, every pause, and build fantastic imaginings of theories more detailed than the plot itself.

Final Thoughts on This Twisted Revelation

As excited or annoyed as you might be about this news, one thing should be certain: Scream 7 is going to be another crazy ride through the deranged world of Woodsboro. Neve Campbell’s clarification could have been devastating to our notions and expectations; however, it has simply reminded us why we enjoyed this franchise so much in the first place: the capacity to surprise the audience when they are least expecting it.

Strap on in horror fans. Based on this revelation alone, Scream 7 is sure to wring us out once more emotionally. And honestly? We’ll probably end up thanking them for it.
