Ryan Gosling’s Mysterious Star Wars: Starfighter set for 2027 release
The teaser for Star Wars: Starfighter was unveiled at Star Wars Celebration yesterday. All it showed was the movie’s title, but it still had the audience cheering. Since there hasn’t been a new Star Wars film since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker, this film, along with next year’s The Mandalorian and Grogu, are generating excitement.
Star Wars: Starfighter Will Star Ryan Gosling
While little is known about the movie itself, we do know its lead actor. Barbie and La La Land star Ryan Gosling showed up at the Celebration to promote the film, along with the film’s director, Shawn Levy. Levy directed last year’s hit Deadpool and Wolverine, and he stated that Ryan Gosling starring in his movie was “a dream come true for me.”
Speculations
The movie will supposedly take place five years after The Rise of Skywalker. This naturally raises the question of whether or not any sequel trilogy characters, such as Rey, Finn, or Poe, will appear in the film. While Shawn Levy states that the film “will not be a prequel or a sequel,” that doesn’t out rule the possibility that we might see familiar faces in small roles.
The film’s title also opens doors for speculation. In 2001, a Star Wars video game was released with the same title, Star Wars: Starfighter. The game took place during The Phantom Menace and told the story of Naboo starfighters defending their planet from the Trade Federation. Given that the new movie takes place in a different era, it’s obviously not going to follow the plot of the game. However, there might be a chance that the movie could reference the game. We might even see the beautiful planet Naboo again.
What About the Rey Movie?
Questions also arise about the fate of the standalone Rey movie, which has supposedly been in development for years. It was originally slated for a 2026 release, but then Disney removed it from that release date. Now, with The Mandalorian and Grogu set for 2026 and Star Wars: Starfighter set for 2027, one has to wonder if Rey’s journey to rebuild the Jedi Order will ever see a release.
In any case, fans will be looking forward to these two movies. Perhaps new theatrical releases are exactly what Star Wars needs to get fans excited again. Star Wars: Starfighter is set for release on May 28, 2027.
