‘Power Rangers’ Reboot Set for Disney+ Release
If you’re like me and grew up yelling “Go Go Power Rangers!” at your TV, you’re not alone — and now there’s reason to feel that call again. After years of speculation, the iconic franchise is officially morphing back to life, with a new live-action reboot of “Power Rangers” slated for release on Disney+.
A New Era Begins
This week, Disney+ confirmed that they are developing a new live-action “Power Rangers” series. The project is being spearheaded by Hasbro Entertainment, which owns the Power Rangers IP, in collaboration with 20th Television. Leading the creative charge will be longtime collaborators Jonathan E. Steinberg and Dan Shotz, best known for their work on “Percy Jackson and the Olympians”.
As TheWrap reported, Steinberg and Shotz are “in talks to write, show-run and produce a live-action Power Rangers series for Disney+.”
What We Know So Far
- Production backing: Hasbro Entertainment is signed on as producer, with 20th Television aiding in development and distribution.
- Creative leadership: Steinberg and Shotz bring a proven track record from “Percy Jackson”, potentially combining teen-drama sensibilities with the action and heart that defined the original Rangers.
- Rationale for reboot: After multiple iterations — including the 2017 film reboot and the 2023 finale season of “Power Rangers Cosmic Fury” — franchise owners believe the time is right to reintroduce “Power Rangers” to a new generation on streaming.
What’s Still Unknown
Despite confirmation of the reboot, there’s much we don’t yet know:
- No release date yet. As of now, Disney+ hasn’t announced when the series will premiere.
- No cast or storyline details. It’s unclear whether this reboot will resurrect the classic Ranger team — Jason, Zack, Kimberly, Trini, Billy — or introduce a brand-new squad. Both Steinberg and Shotz have declined to confirm any details about the characters. “The rumor is true,” Steinberg reported to MovieWeb, while Shotz added, “we very much hope to bring that story to life.”
- Tone and direction uncertain. Will the reboot stick to the nostalgic tone of the original 1990s series? Or will it adopt a darker, more modern interpretation? That remains up in the air.
What This Means for Fans
For longtime fans, this reboot offers hope for a return to the giant Zords, colorful suits, and team-up heroics that defined their childhood, with a contemporary polish. For a new audience, it could serve as a fresh entry point into a deeply iconic franchise, potentially blending classic “morphin’ time” action with modern storytelling sensibilities.
As of now, the series remains in early development, but if all goes well, we could be hearing that iconic call — “It’s Morphin’ Time!” — again in the near future.
