Peter Jackson Quiets Retirement Rumors; Details The Crazy Project He’s Been Working On

Peter Jackson is one of the greatest filmmakers the world has ever seen. Most know him from The Lord of the Rings movies, which have been released in two separate trilogies. All of them have been critically acclaimed, with Return of the King being one of the most awarded movies of all time. It’s been 11 years since Jackson had his hands in a film, leading many to wonder whether the 63-year-old director was heading towards retirement. Jackson struck down those rumors and detailed the crazy project he has been working on.

Peter Jackson Not Retiring Just Yet

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies was the last movie Peter Jackson directed. He has had his hands in some documentaries since then but no feature films. In a recent interview, Jackson was asked whether he was retiring from filmmaking and he gave an insight into what he was working on.

“No, no. I’m certainly not retired. We are currently working on three different screenplays. I’m at the moment writing three different scripts.”

“We are producing and have been writing ‘The Hunt for Gollum,’ which Andy Serkis is going to direct next year. I’ve enjoyed working on documentaries, whether they show I’ve grown old or not, and obviously the ‘Get Back,’ The Beatles project. I’ve enjoyed doing various things with The Beatles, which is great, and that’ll probably carry on.”

Fans can expect more content from the Lord of the Rings universe soon. While fans have been focused on the Amazon Prime Video show, Jackson has been working on a movie starring Golum, which is set to release in December of 2027. Scriptwriting isn’t the only thing the director has been up to.

A Wild Project

Peter Jackson is an investor in Colossal Biosciences, a company that is trying to bring back the extinct Giant Moa. You read that right. Jackson has been heavily involved in trying to bring back an extinct animal. He seems genuniely excited about it.

“To me, de-extincting the Moa would be just as exciting, if not more exciting, than any film I could possibly make. I’ve made a lot of movies, but to see the Giant Moa brought back would be a level of excitement that I think would supersede anything at this point in time.”

The Giant Moa was a 12-foot bird that used to roam New Zealand. Peter Jackson and Colossal Biosciences want to see it roam the earth again. This is a super cool project the director is involved in and it makes sense that he would more time to devote to it.

Final Thoughts

Fans won’t have to wait long to see his next movie. We will be getting more details on the Golum movie soon as it is only two and a half years away.
