New ‘Paranormal Activity’ Film Backed By Wan and Blum For a Major Horror Comeback

A new “Paranormal Activity” movie is officially in the works, and this time, it’s bringing some serious horror royalty along for the ride. Horror titans James Wan (“The Conjuring”, “Saw”) and Jason Blum (“The Purge,” “Get Out”) are teaming up to resurrect the franchise that made us all terrified of our own homes.

Details We Know So Far

Details are still hiding in the shadows, but Paramount Pictures and the newly formed Blumhouse-Atomic Monster are making this film a top priority. The original 2007 film, shot on a shoestring budget of just $15,000, became a global phenomenon, pulling in nearly $200 million, proving that you don’t need a massive budget to scare the living daylights out of people.

James Wan, a self-professed fan of the original, expressed his excitement, saying how he admired the “Paranormal Activity” franchise ever since the first movie. He comments on how the film’s aesthetic made the story and execution so terrifying. From an IGN article, Wan happily commented, “I’m looking forward to expanding on its legacy and helping shape the next evolution of this scary found-footage franchise.”

Jason Blum echoed that sentiment, adding a dash of his signature humor. He remarks how thankful he is knowing that the budget for the movie is gonna be more than $15,000. Overall, he is very excited to be working with Wan and touching base with one of the genre’s most redefining franchises.

The New Paranormal Activity Film: Reboot or Sequel?

The big question on everyone’s mind is whether this eighth installment will connect to the previous films or start fresh. The franchise’s last entry, 2021’s “Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin”, was intended to be a soft reboot but didn’t quite land with critics or fans. The lore of the series, which involves a complex web of witches, covens, and a demon named “Toby,” had become pretty convoluted by the sixth film, “The Ghost Dimension.”

Wan and Blum have a golden opportunity to take the core concept—a haunting captured on camera—and reintroduce it to a new audience without the baggage of seven previous films. They can get back to what made the original so terrifying: the simplicity of a bump in the night, a door creaking open on its own, and the chilling realization that you’re not alone in your own house. The duo is the only ones who know how it’s going to be, but it would be great if the franchise got the same revamp treatment as “Halloween.”

The involvement of Wan and Blum is what makes this news so exciting. These two have their fingerprints all over modern horror. Bringing their combined expertise to the franchise that arguably kicked off the 21st-century found-footage craze feels like a perfect match. They’re not alone, either. Oren Peli, the mastermind who directed the original film, is returning as a producer! After so many sequels, Peli is bound to have ideas he’d want to share for this new installment.

Final Thoughts: The EMF Readings Are Off The Charts!

Wan and Blum working together for the upcoming “Paranormal Activity” movie has its air buzzing with supernatural energy. For now, the plot, director, and release date remain a mystery. Just thinking about what these two powerhouses of modern and iconic horror can accomplish together has my whole essence covered in goosebumps. I wonder what Tody is gonna think when he finds out that Wan and Blum are now taking a stab at his story.
