Oscar Isaac Reflects on Controversial Disney Drama and His Future With Star Wars
The reckless X-Wing pilot Poe Dameron, played by Oscar Isaac, was a favorite among โStar Warsโ fans. People enjoyed his humorous, Han Solo-like demeanor and his big heart. Many thought that he was underdeveloped in the โStar Warsโ sequels, so they would like to see Oscar Isaac return to his X-Wing seat, but is Issac willing to take on the galaxy far, far away again?
Oscar Isaac on Returning to Star Wars
In an interview with GQ where he was promoting the new Guillermo del Toro โFrankensteinโ movie, Oscar Isaac discussed his issues with donning Poe Dameronโs orange X-Wing pilot uniform again. Previously, he had said he would only consider returning if he โneeded another house,โ but he admitted in the interview that it was โa slightly (expletive) thing to say.โ So, would he be interested in returning now? Hereโs what Isaac said:
โYeah. I mean, Iโd be open to it, although right now Iโm not so open to working with Disney. But if they can kinda figure it out and, you know, not succumb to fascism, that would be great.โ
โSuccumb to Fascismโ? What Does This Mean?
A note included with the interview stated, โhis interview was conducted two days after ABC and Disney suspended production of Jimmy Kimmel Live! in response to comments Kimmel made following the death of Charlie Kirk. Kimmel was back on the air four days after this conversation took place.โ
Many have called Kimmelโs suspension an attack on free speech. Millions of people cancelled their Disney+ subscriptions after the incident, which is likely what led to Kimmel being reinstated. People across the country have seen the Trump administrationโs various attacks on free speech as the seeds of fascism. It sounds like Oscar Isaac wants Disney to take a stand, and only then would he consider coming back to โStar Wars.โ
The People vs. Disney
Oscar Isaac isnโt the only โStar Warsโ actor to have issues with Disney. Adam Driver, who played Kylo Ren, recently revealed that his planned movie, โThe Hunt for Ben Soloโ was unceremoniously cancelled by Disney, despite two years of work. John Boyega, who played Finn, was unsatisfied with how his character was handled in the sequel trilogy. In addition, millions of fans have expressed displeasure with the sequel trilogyโs uneven storytelling.
How can Disney reconcile themselves? Perhaps the answer lies in a follow-up to โThe Rise of Skywalker.โ A follow-up tentatively titled โNew Jedi Orderโ is reportedly in production, though it keeps running into roadblocks. If Disney could get it off the ground, it could perhaps offer the further development that the characters deserve. Perhaps we will see Poe Dameron fly again.
