Mortal Kombat II Producer Teases Huge Franchise Expansion Beyond Sequel

Mortal Kombat fans, buckle up, because it looks like the franchise is just getting warmed up. Todd Garner, producer of Mortal Kombat II, is feeling ambitious as he lays the groundwork for what could be a Mortal Kombat Cinematic Universe (MCMU? Anyone?). Because what’s better than one Johnny Cage fight scene? A whole series of them, along with spin-offs for your favorite characters.

Mortal Kombat II  Producer Teasing Franchise

If you’re someone who’s been holding your breath for Liu Kang’s next flawless victory or wondering when we’ll finally see the actual Mortal Kombat tournament (spoiler: it was left out of the first film), Garner’s got you covered. First things first, the sequel aims to deliver where the reboot felt like a glorified pregame warm-up. Mortal Kombat II promises more Johnny Cage (now played by Karl Urban, because of course Karl Urban) and the actual tournament, which sounds a lot like the central premise you’d expect from a franchise called Mortal Kombat.

Shocking, I know. Fans of the games will also be pleased to hear that the mythology is set to expand. More characters. More lore. More “Finish Him!” moments. If the trailer is any indication, the new film could look like an orgy of bad-assery wrapped in five layers of nostalgia. Whether it delivers remains to be seen, but Garner’s confident enough to already be teasing what’s beyond this flick.

Producer Todd Garner said, “We’re hoping this is not the end of the Mortal Kombat franchise. “There are plans are going forward; other characters that aren’t in this movie, characters that may come back. If we’re allowed to do further movies—hopefully this one does well enough—there are chances to do other things, spin-offs, another sequel to propel the story.”

With properly cut fatalities (this is Mortal Kombat, after all) and narrative upgrades where characters’ emotional arcs balance out their gory blows, there’s a very real shot Mortal Kombat II could redefine video-game-to-film adaptations. The good news? Mortal Kombat thrives on chaos. Fans love the franchise because its DNA is about spectacle, absurdly committed duels, and an unshakable sense of fun. The franchise knows who it is. It’s raw, over-the-top, and dripping in unapologetic ’90s energy, even when dressed up for modern audiences.

Final Thoughts

If the 2021 film felt like a prologue to the tournament, then Mortal Kombat II can finally drag fans into that high-stakes, bone-crunching contest. Picture the wild fights, alliances, betrayals, and moments that can define not just this installment, but also build bridges for sequels. Building focus on “the tournament” storyline might turn the film into the franchise-defining moment moviemakers hoped the first would be. Also, expect the rivalry between Scorpion and Sub-Zero to continue.
